New strobes on Olympus TG 5

I just got some Inon S 2000 strobes for my TG 5. Currently I'm just trying to get one working in macro mode.

I set the camera up per the Backscatter macro video. Stopped down -2.0, ISO 100, flash on fill in, etc. I have the strobe on STTL to start.

I've played with adjusting the exposure setting, adjusted strobe compensation on strobe, magnet in, magnet out and the strobe will flash but my image is vastly underexposed. I must be missing something simple. Is there a synchronizing step to make sure the timing of the flash is correct or something?

I would suggest not stopping down to -2.0 to start and see if that fixes your exposure problem. You may eventually want to invest in more powerful strobes.

By vastly underexposed I mean like from total black to very little image taking a shot of a wine cork on a table at 2 inches in normal room lighting. I've run it from -2.0 to +2.0 with minimal change. Varied ASA to well over 400 and not much change. Works fine in Aperature priority mode. My friend has the exact setup and gets some decent macro shots. He's in Bonaire so comparing settings side by side is a bit of a pain until Oct. 5th or so. I suppose I could go all the way across the lake to Ocean's Optical and see what they think. Seattle traffic isn't much fun though.

Tried something else. I powered up the other strobe. Noticed something different right away, the strobe ready light was on. Took a few with that one and got good results. Looks like the first strobe has an issue.

Fixed the other one. The battery wrapping (label) got scraped by the connection when installing it and the non conducting label was causing weak electrical contact with one battery.
