I’m an AOW diver and recently dove with Nitrox (33) for the first time. Two dives... 75 ft / 60 ft, stayed well within NDL limits with an hour surface interval. During my 2nd dive at 60 feet, I had this overwhelming sensation of being drunk/fuzzy/stoned. I ascended to 55 feet and it went away. Towards the end of the dive had issues with cramping, but otherwise, those were the only unusual sensations. I’ve been working on my air consumption by trying to breathe slower. Long slow inhales... long slow exhales. SAC was 16, which was a record low.

Was this buzzed feeling nitrogen narcosis? Or something else?

I’ve had no issues on deeper dives with air, and no issues on the 1st Nitrox dive to 75ft. Puzzled about what happened. I dove with an inactive instructor and she indicated possibly vertigo, but I’ve experienced vertigo once (a long time ago) and this felt different... plus it went away as soon as I ascended a few feet.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SAC was 0.16cft/min? Are you sure you’re calculating this right?

If that SAC is correct, you've got gills and there's no way in heck you could have been narked.

Disregarding the fact that it's very unlikely that anyone would feel narked at 60'/18m. No matter their breathing gas.

What makes you think he is not reporting a sac of 16 psi/min?

Because that would not be a volume without knowing cylinder stats

They may well be reporting a SAC of 16 (whatever unit). But psi/min is a completely meaningless unit unless depth and tank volume is specified. So I assumed that a decimal point was missing.

Yes I know. Assumptions are bad.

sac Is not always reported as volume, it is just as often reported as psi. For example Shearwater computers show you live sac and average sac in psi per min. To get volume you have to do conversion. Assuming al80 his converted sac was .4256 cuft per min

That sounds more reasonable. Is it possible you were skip breathing? You could be retaining co2 but I wouldn’t expect that to go away immediately by ascending 20 ft it would gradually work out as you became better oxygenated.

SAC could be 16cf per minute. If so the dive was way too short to be narced.
