My wife and I are going to Cozumel soon and I have a question about the trip from Cancun to Coz, please. We will be schlepping our diving gear in suitcases along with a carry on bag each. The question is what do most people do when you reach the ferry - do you "check" bags on the ferry? Can you roll your bags onto the ferry? Are there steps that you would have to carry your bags up? Thanks for your help.

once you make your way to playa, either by taxi, car, or ADO bus, you can easily walk with your luggage don to the ferry dock. there are porters around if you need help but it is a pretty short walk.not a big deal. after you buy your tickets you wait in the holding area. when it is time to board you make your way down to the pier with your luggage. at the boat they will tag your bags that have to be stowed. you can carry on small items. once in coz you claim your luggage on the pier after disembarking. the bagge guys will match your tags with each bag to make sure no one takes the wrong ones. then you walk with your luggage toward the street and their are taxis waiting there. piece of cake.

Thanks very much for the great info. That's very helpful!!

At the ferry pier in Playa, if you don't use a porter you will need to take your bags with you up an escalator, not a big deal.

The guys loading the bags at the ferry might ask you if your bag contains scuba gear. If you tell them yes they might have you load it yourself and place it at the rear of the boat. I usually just say no so I don't have to deal with it. They use boarding ramps to enter the boats you can roll a bag on with but you will have one small step getting to get off the ramp onto the boat. If you want to go on any of the upper decks there are kind of steep steps.

I would like to add that getting tags for your bags is quite important. On our last trip the bicycle porter brought our bags down to the dock and we did not get tags. The result was all our bags never made it to COZ as they were left on the docks.
Lucky for us a few hours later the bags made it, but lesson learned, make sure your bags have tags.

If you take a van or bus from the airport to PDC that makes intermediate stops, watch the bags being unloaded so that yours are not left by mistake. In Coz, I get out of the van at every stop before mine to watch.

In PDC, use the tricycle porters to get your bags to the dock, regardless of how you arrive. They work for tips, and don't seem to expect much. One time arriving at the Coz ferry with two much luggage to handle alone, I grabbed the last porter to meet a late ferry, and not only did he carry my bags on his tricycle - he had me ride all the way to my 5th Ave downtown hotel!

My experience is that the tricycle porter will get your ferry tags for you, but do be sure you do - however it works out for you.

The ramps often have ribs that make "rolling" a bag difficult. They do not issue tags for checked bags if you have scuba gear in your bag.

I've never been asked, but that would suck. Wonder why? So best to answer No?

If you ask them they will just shrug. Some have speculated it is to keep potentially wet gear on back deck away from the other checked gear. I've always been asked and I always tell them it's scuba and I never get a tag but I've never lost a bag or anything from within the bag. It's more of an oddity than a concern.
