Yep. Got that. I have an idea for the checked issue below. Clumsy point I was making was that it isn’t really a big deal when TSA ask you to show them the plate or any other scuba equipment in hand luggage. I’m sure others have had different experiences. But I seem to get stopped every time I go through security and it’s generally a very short exchange and wouldn’t be a factor in whether I would or wouldn’t carry a plate in hand luggage....there wouldn’t be a situation where I would say ‘ I would carry it hand luggage but I don’t want to go through all the hassle with the TSA guys’.... because I have never found it to be an issue/hassle really and they pretty much always make me show the kit in screening.

Same with check. I always take my checked scuba to the oversized dropoff so they can put it through the X-ray there and then and ask questions ref plates SMB ( always the metal in that sets them off) Also find that line to be much shorter than regular checkin...so I suppose in response, I wouldn’t worry too much about either...

I am referring to what happens when you check a plate.
You never know. I flew from Toronto to Atlanta 2 days ago. In YYZ, my backpack was sidelined after the X-Rays. I had to wait for 15 min because there were 5 other bags ahead of mine waiting for their turn to be checked. But the TSA agent did not even look inside my backpack and only took some swabs for the explosives detector from the outside of the backpack. So either this was a random check, or they did not like my profile or God knows what else. But nothing to do with what the content of my backpack.

Patagonia 60 liter black hole duffel. Best luggage ever.

I recently made a 6 day dive trip to Kona, i decided to not check any bags. I carried on everything I wanted to take in one standard carry-on rollaboard and a backpack.

The only dive gear i didn't take was wetsuit and weights. Both were available for rent.
I think next time I would rent fins too. They took up too much space and it also meant i had to take my booties for them to fit. Next time I would rent warm water fins and have a lot of room left over for more clothes, or for souvenirs I might want to bring back.

I’ve been looking At this. I like the fact the front pocket can be removed and worn as a backpack. So you can wear all your gear together. Check in the larger bag and then carry on the back pack. My only concern is I can’t tell if you can lock the zippers on the larger bag for check in. Also haven’t found great pictures of the internal size

I’ve read of people using the plate as a base for a backpack, then putting everything else into the pack.

But if they weigh your backpack, they'll do so with your BP. Putting it under your clothes circumvents that.

Now I wonder what one of these skeleton dogbone plates would look like on that scattering x-ray pix. Wear it low enough to cover your wibbly bits and imagine what kind of stories you're gonna tell the friendly TSA officer.
