The Titanium Backplate from Helium Dive Gear is a good example. Does it need service? No. So it is only about the purchase. If I would be looking at a new backplate and could easily get that one for a reasonable price I would not hesitate just "because it is from Russia". On the otherhand I would not spend too much effort, trying to get my hands on one if it were not easily available.

Oh man, you folks discounting Russia obviously know nothing about Helium Dive Gear (Helium Dive - Оборудование для дайвинга из Титана) owned by Paul Okishev.

Some really top notch stuff. I have one of his titanium backplates. It is the most nicely machined backplates I have or have seen. That includes Halcyon.

It is only a backplate, not much to it. If it were anything more elaborate or complicated, I'd stay away from it. Does "Lada" remind you of anything?

Bad analogy. Should I discount all Italian goods because Cressi makes such crap? Sure it is just a backplate but it is made with precision, the ability to make parts with tight tolerance means that quality products can be made.

In my experience you can get good or bad from all countries. It depends on the quality control but on it and the specs called for.

Who is going to put controls on "Russian" made products? I'd never buy life support equipment made in Russia or its satellite republics.

Are their aircraft manufacture(s) any better you think (I am talking about the Russians)?

Couple of points on this post. 1. After purchase support is just as important as quality. With Regulators etc you have to have availablility of parts, service, and warranty. If a company does not have a presence in your country this would be extremely challenging. 2. Cressi “makes such crap?”, really? I have a D6 signature and a Cressi MC9/Compact set, both work extremely well. I also have a Cressi Travellite BCD and a VDH BP/W, again both work very well. Saying a brand is crap without supporting evidence does not support your argument.

I have no insight into the manufacturing capabilities/precision of Russian airplane manufacturers.

I do have insight on Paul's operation. I have some idea as to what is involved from some other companies, and I quickly picked up that he will only produce quality, well machined products. The fact that he's Russian is irrelevant. While he has a small company (just one guy afaik), he makes a good product. If he were to partner up with others equally committed to creating more quality products, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him any products that fulfill my needs.

I had two Cressi regs that I threw in the trash, as they were failing, had a poor design, and new parts kept breaking. Those regs (and it's been years, so I can't tell you which ones) were the lowest quality products I've ever encountered. They should have never been sold. Does that mean every Cressi product is crap? No. But they do sell some crap.
