What about UTD/ISE as their roots are in GUE?

I think expirations make sense due to inactivity at a certain level, but not a renewal fee.

UTD certifications do not expire. They strongly recommend that you do the least number of dives but it is all honor system. ISE certifications will expire and you need to pay an instructor to re-evaluate you regardless of how many dives you have done at that level.

I was recently told on this board that you can lose your cert for diving solo with GUE.

I thought it was AJ, but I could be wrong. I asked at EE to confirm and was told the same thing.

I have never heard about or seem this. Know several that actively solo dive. Instructors have different rules, they seen as representatives and are not allowed to solo dive ever.

About 4 years ago the GUE training director saw me In the water by the steps alone at Ginnie. I was on OC waiting for my buddies to finish redoing their rebreather checks. He thought I was solo cave diving and told me he was pissed and was gonna have my cards voided. There weren't any other OC guys around so he didn't believe they were diving with me. It was a hassle as I had to have my friends stop their prebreath to verify they were fixing a leak we saw in the water and redoing all checks to be safe while I was waiting for them.

BTW, We had a great 3 hour dive together.

If I was in your shoes, I would have had my certification instantly revoked! LOL

David said that? I would have said its none of his business

No, you will lose the ability to teach for GUE if you dive solo. It’s part of the conditions of being a GUE instructor. Its a huge amount of work and a significant amount of money to become a GUE instructor, so if solo diving is important then don’t become one.

I’d have told him to go f himself. I’m not going to interrupt my buddies on their rebreathers to make someone happy.

According to their website, ISE not only has a renewal fee, but also a mandatory check dive in order to requalify:

Requalification | InnerSpace Explorers

While I do understand the rationale behind this, I do prefer the honors system of GUE.

(If I were to be out of the water for a significant time, I would myself schedule some kind of refresh. That could be with buddies or an instructor, depending on the issue at hand.)
