I'm in Roatan, Honduras and was spearing lionfish from the channel behind my house. I speared one and removed it on a fish cleaning table (with the tide in, the table was in about 3" of water). My cat came down and waded thru the water, jumped up on the table, took the lionfish back up to the house and devoured it under the steps. By the time I noticed this, she had eaten most of it.

Anyone have any experience on whether the lionfish venom is harmful to felines?

I suppose they are indirectly ancestors from the cat family *

My cat eats lion fish and scraps of lion fish all the time, as do I. I like it fried, grilled, blackened, and raw.

Your cat is not likely to eat the spines.

According to what I've read, the venom isn't poisonous if merely ingested. So, if she managed not to poke herself, then she might be okay.

It's a big internet though, I might have read some outright lies.

HELLO KITTY,
"spines can deliver a painful sting, from glands in the fish’s fins. Fileting takes a delicate touch, to avoid pricking a finger. But venom is only dangerous if injected,"

. . . Fileting takes a delicate touch . . .

Just the job for a cat!

My cat kills and eats scorpions, snakes and bats and got bit on the nose by a morey eel when she poked her nose into an aquarium one time. She is 17 years old and still going strong. If your cat got stung by a spine you would know it by now. M
