actually I price it to be reasonable, I don't believe my courses are good only because I charge Canadian dollars I believe it is good value because I make it good value

Frankly, I don’t remember what it was exactly but it could have been a lot more since it was very thorough. That danged alumisteel.

I inspect my own cylinders. My stickers have my name, address, and phone number.

If I ever make a mistake and somebody gets hurt or worse because I passed a cylinder I shouldn't have, it isn't going to make any difference what stickers I used, what certifications I may or may not have had, or what forms were filled out by me or anyone else. This is the grand fallacy behind the PSI-PCI inspection and inspector certification and recertification process.

Because if that happens, the only thing that is going to matter is how many millions of dollars of liability insurance I have.

Most people can get several million dollars of liability insurance coverage for about the same amount of money as it costs to keep a PCI certification "current" and have a stack of forms and stickers. You choose.
 
as far as I know I have the only money guarantee in Ontario if not Canada always have .....as far as certification is concerned if you have it you have it , right now there really is only 2 certs to get (I have both ) , I see a lot of lds training their own people , that's not to say they are not good inspectors BUT is that position defendable ? good training is good..... bad training is bad . I had a student tell me once they had a friend who took a vip class they inspected 1 tank ....does that give you an opinion ?

Don't you just love that? People who make millions by legal blackmail. They don't do or make anything, just take money from those who do.

I'm sure that it is righteous though, somebody has to profit by being the threat to bad behavior. [/OPINION]
 
good training is good..... bad training is bad . I had a student tell me once they had a friend who took a vip class they inspected 1 tank ....does that give you an opinion ?

Knowing when to go for help is a lost art too.

Back when I was still active with PSI (10yrs ago) I called them about a fold in a steel tank I was VIPing for a friend. It was a pretty significant <looking> fold. The tank was at least 8 years old at the point but I was leery. Mark G. at PSI was good about walking me through how to evaluate that. I passed the tank.

I have brought tanks to my local hydro shop for VIP twice too. They see WAAAY more tanks than I ever will and I wanted a second opinion. They passed one and failed one (not at the same time, these were 5 yrs apart)
 
@abnfrog 's "aluma-steel" is a classic.

Steve's inspectors are trained to call it to standards. So easy for an inspector to trash someone else's cylinder just to keep liability off of them. No fair. People pay you to test to standards. We drove the miles, paid the course, proved our basic understanding, did the chalk and talk, and finally dealt with four judgment call cylinders. Nerve-wracking...

There is a lot out there by way of published literature and guidance for the inspector. I'll post some later, busy now...

If I have questions, I’ll ask! But I’ll be doing my own tanks, plus the AL80s of a regular buddy which used to be mine. Well cared for.
