Are you speaking of it being dumb while in caves? or anywhere?
If in caves, isn't the "dumb" issue the single, not the thirds?
I'm trying to understand the context for your blanket prohibition...

Cavern/Intro level divers need MORE gas than anyone else for a problem yet they were (in programs allowing singles at these levels) allowed to dive thirds = dumb
Diving in an overhead without a wholly redundant gas supply = dumb again (an H valve doesn't count as wholly redundant)

Both of these notions should be dumped in the trash heap of "bad practices of the past"

OK, understood that the context is caves, and singles is the primary issue, not thirds. Thirds just makes it worse.

I'm less in agreement for cavern.....and my guess is that most people who take cavern stop at that level of training and do not continue on to Intro and Cave. It is purely a high-end recreational activity....and if they like it they can bite the bullet and get the right equipment and go on to Intro. Kind of like a recreational Nitrox class. Almost useless for Advanced Nitrox.

For a true cavern dive -- within sight of the entrance -- that is restricted (depends on the agency) to 130 ft or so for depth plus penetration, the risk is much lower, so the level of needed redundancy is also less.....seems like singles are not so bad.

Following-up: PSAI seems to imply you can dive a single tank, stating that gas management is thirds but sixths if you're diving doubles. So that's two, at least.
