Thought I'd share the dumb thing I did this past year (can't remember anything from prior years!) Figure it can be a learning experience. You know what they say about karma.....

Did 10 boat dives off the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. On the last day, I was enjoying another great dive. Had seen a leaf scorpionfish, yellow frogfish, dragon wrasse, sponge crab, and a couple of mantas on previous dives. So on the 9th dive, About 30 minutes into the dive, I saw a dusty sea cucumber and signaled to my dive buddy I was going to it. He saw it also and knew what I was going to do. After getting to it I checked my buddy again who was a little farther away - the rest of our group a little farther ahead of him. I began to dust the sand off of the sea cucumber to spell my last name. When I was done I looked up at my buddy who was not there; no-one was there. KARMA for touching the sea cucumber! - visibility was good so I looked for bubbles - NONE! I started swimming in the direction the group had gone and saw nothing. Good on air, I started thinking about what I was going to do - actually I first thought "you deserved this." I swam back to the last place I had been with everyone - by the sea cucumber. Along the way my thoughts were that I knew the direction of the shore (it's the only thing I really use my compass for), we were probably no more than 4-5 football fields away from shore, there was no boat traffic in the area, the water was calm on the surface and with no other boat traffic, I probably would see the dive boat if I surfaced and if I didn't see the boat, I was going to be pretty embarrassed when I saw everyone again. Once back to where I lost everyone, I swam to the other side of a large rock feature and everyone went swimming by. Turns out had I surfaced right there I would have been within 100 feet of the boat. Yes, I took a picture of the sea cucumber with my last name on it to remind me not to touch the sea life!!

Anyone else with a story?

Is there a 'lost buddy procedure' with that group?

A few months ago I was on a dive where one buddy of another nearby buddy team came over signalling that his buddy was lost, so after looking around for a short while, I shot a DSMB and asked the boat whether anyone has surfaced - no - so the boat kept a lookout top side and the 3 of us searched underwater for a good 15min, then surfaced at the agreed dive time - up came the buddy who thought he should continue his dive alone instead of surfacing to regroup.

It was quite annoying since it would've only taken 2-3 minutes to regroup and descend again if procedure was followed, this way 3 other divers and the boat wasted 30% of their own dive searching for someone, getting worried.

Now show the cucumber.

No official plan from the op. My buddy and I have about 120 dives together and generally keep a good eye on each other and communicate pretty well.

Okay, so here's the cucumber! Now I see how bad I messed the H up!

A guide had always been swimming very fast and I asked him to slow down, because I had a camera and wanted to take pictures. On one particular dive, I got frustrated with the speed of the dive and thought I would just take matters into my own hands, stop whenever I wanted to take a picture, and catch up after. I would just look for bubbles. Unfortunately, visibility was terrible and another dive group passed by, so it wasn't easy to tell which direction my group went. I waited a moment and found the bubble trail and caught up, just as the guide was turning around to check on us. I'll not do that again in poor vis.

My first liveaboard, around mid-week, after getting way to comfortable, attempted a "negative entry", as per the rest of the week (don't like other ranks to hit my head) just this time, with no lead.
I didn't have the balls to blame it in the buddy

Just...why? Kinda like the youngsters who carve their names into redwoods. At least the cucumber will not be left with a scar.
