I will be travelling with my JJ for the first time soon. As this is my first time and I am still relatively new to rebreather diving, I am not sure what spares and bits to carry. Does anyone have a list of spares that they usually carry?

Also any particular things which you have found useful to carry to save a rebreather trip?
 
In 5 years I have had two issues in the wild. First was a crushed HUD second was failed head electronics so the HUD would not connect. So I have never had to use any spares...
I had to replace the ADV isolator. Fortunately the one that let go did so at home a week ahead, now I have a spare.

I always have a spare new cell, and probably the last one I retired.

Then I almost certainly have an o ring set, spare paper mesh, a spare knob for the scrubber (I am certain those will both blow away one day), a spare back plate bolt. Mostly stuff that I will lose by putting it down and not finding it again due to being an idiot.

Tear Aid - that saved my MOD1 on a rental unit.

I have wing inflator, not the hose, just the bit that sticks open because of salt build up...
DSV mouthpiece. Cable ties.

I probably have a BOV service kit, mushroom valves etc too as all those bits are really small and light and might as well come with me.

I usually have a spare bailout reg which is a DS4 which I would use in a pinch.

Apart from the reg, it all fits in a small toolbox.

If I was going to Truk, Bikini or some such I would take a spare hud (£250 or excuse to buy a Nerd) and maybe try to borrow a spare head.
 
this is what i used with a few adjustments:

Essential:

T20 Torx driver
for the 10 M4*20 setscrews securing the battery cover and the BOV barrel securing screw (definitely need)

#1 Pozidrive screwdriver for BOV collars and MAV (didnt need)

2.5mm Allen key
for loosening t-piece grub screws

5mm Allen key
for the T-piece inlet banjos, regulator blanking plugs and capscrew securing the inlet/outlet tubes in the head

6mm Allen key
for adjusting the regulator IP

14mm spanner for O2 t-piece inlet pipe and all Miflex hoses (3/8" end)

17mm spanner for Miflex hoses (9/16" end)

O-ring pick

Handy:

Needle-nosed pliers for removing ADV diaphragm cover and BOV barrel

10mm spanner for nyloc nuts securing stand

15 mm spanner for removing BOV barrel (didnt need)

1/4" socket/spanner for dismantling BOV barrel (didnt need)

40-42mm C-spanner for dismantling regulators

T30 Torx driver for the screws securing the webbing strap on head (definitely need)

ADV tilt valve
Solenoid (proprietary)

The wrenches and spanners are available from others almost always. The JJ uses torx screws and you wont find wrenches in most places, bring at least a torx 20.I have a spare HUD that i bring but have never used. I havent brought the DS4 regulator, but I have both an O2 and Dil ones set up at home. I have had a leaky DSV and had to replace the Orings in it. I have had to replace my solenoid while away but thankfully that was in FL cave country and I didnt miss a day of diving.

It really depends on where you are going and how much support is available in your destination.

Thanks for the suggestions, good suggestions...definitely don't want to throw away a couple weeks diving after my scrubber nut falls overboard!!

Another question about travelling with rebreathers (specifically JJ). When you carry the head as hand luggage, do you normally leave the controller and HUD connected or do you remove them while in transit to reduce the chance of damage?

I leave them together. I am very paranoid about the connectors being damaged, becoming dirty etc.

Most recently though I leave the head in the unit and pack everything with clothes etc.
 
Leave them connected. It seems to be more common among jj users to pack the head and controllers in the unit for travel.
 
What jstrang has listed as required is pretty much what I travel with as well. Only thing i would add to the list is a product called "tear aid type A" you can get it on amazon for a couple bucks and it will save your a$$ works perfect for repairing holes in counterlungs, wing, etc. I think the two weakest links on the JJ are first the HUD (if you look at that thing wrong it will brake) and the counterlungs, they are supper easy to get pin hole leaks in. I find during handling on surface the bag material inside can get small holes when pinched between other units, tanks, stands during transportation on boats, back or trucks, etc.

Also I would suggest spare o rings/rebuild kits of your stage regs i find out of anything if im going to need a spare or work on something it will involve replacing an o-ring on a reg specifically those little SPG spool o-rings I swear it seems like I am changing those or a friends all the time. When I was in the US I ordered a bag of 100 of them and the good Viton FKM ones for like $3-$4 from theoringstore.com and they have saved so many dives.
