Hi! my name is Mariah and I am new in diving. So recently I was lurking this forum and found out that many of us around here are very much concerned about diving bags and also use them all the time. The thing is while I dive I dont think I will be carry something with me. Is is necessary at all ?. People are very much into it and I was just wondering do we carry this bag while we dive or just take them with us in the beach?.

I use a soft duffle bag for travel as it weights nothing. I don’t need to pay extra for scuba luggage.

now when I boat dive, I do have a mesh bag that I put my stuff in. I find that it’s easier to bring everything on the boat and I don’t mind if it gets wet, it’s design for that (hence the mesh).

when I dive locally, I just use a Rubbermaid bin in the back of the SUV. All the gear goes in it.

so different transport techniques for different use.

For air travel, we use the Eagle Creek 28" rolling duffel.
For boat dives, we like the Stahlsac Bonaire mesh backpack with built in dry pocket. Easy to stow under bench or attach to handrails with carabiners.
+1 on the Rubbermaid bin when we dive the local quarries.

2nd the Stahlsac mesh products. We use these whenever we have boat dives on day boats somewhere and that is when we bring them along but for liveaboards or places with concierge diving, I don't bother. I bring it all to the shop in my luggage and then back at the end of the trip.

For air travel, I have been using The North Face Rolling Thunder in medium for about a decade. The same one. Similar is the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel. Bombproof!

For home storage, I use a rolling toolbox and keep it in our closet.

While the responses were about which dive bag, I'll say that a dive bag is needed primarily because you need quite a bit of stuff to go diving: BCD, fins, mask, gloves, wetsuit, dive boots, etc. It's a lot easier if you can assemble most of that stuff in a single bag rather than scattered objects. It helps carry it and prevent you from forgetting things. With all of the rest of the stuff you need to remember when traveling it's a lot easier to have all of that assembled. It also helps if something is wet to keep it with the rest of the wet stuff or just in a known location. Further, it helps to keep all that stuff together when stored at home. You won't necessarily keep it all in that bag but again you can keep most of it and reduce the time to assemble stuff for the trip. As people mentioned above, there are a variety of ways to carry the stuff beyond an actual bag.

You might find you want something to keep a few things dry, like a towel and clothing, and something else to pack any wet gear into for the trip home, that won't get the dry things wet. Some bags will perform both functions. A small dry sack or bag inside a big mesh bag is another solution. If you're not packing much or any scuba gear yourself, the big mesh dive bag isn't of much value to you.

I mostly boat dive on one day trips. I bring my own gear, it is not set up on the boat. Need a bag to carry on the boat and a bag to carry it off. I have a separate small bag for carrying a few items to keep dry.

This is the once arrived bag that I use:
COLLAPSING DUFFEL - AKB613 | Product | Duffel Bags
the compartment for the regs is super nice.

I agree about the dry bag. I always throw a small one inside. I put keys, change of clothing, wallet, cellphone, spare battery for the camera, etc inside

Just to be clear, the recent threads about dive bags here are specifically about bags for transporting dive gear to and from the dive site, which by extension includes luggage for bringing dive gear on planes, or dry bags for keeping things dry on boats. They're NOT about bags that you actually bring underwater with you.

There are mesh bags that people bring underwater with them on dives, but those are typically for dives with specialized purposes like trash pickup, hunting, or search and recovery. Most divers I know either don't own one, or don't carry them on normal recreational dives.
