I am a Canadian citizen but am considered a non resident of Canada for tax purposes. According to the DAN website coverage is only available for residents.

What criteria does DAN use to determine if I am a resident or not. I still have a valid Canada driver license? Does that qualify?

DiveAssure will cover me, but their coverage is more expensive and the coverage not as good. What I like about DAN is the 24 hour hot line and available medical consultation for diving issues.

My regular health insurance does cover me for diving within my certification but I think that getting good assistance from them could be difficult. I'm willing to pay the $40 for the basic DAN coverage just to get that, it will also cover my deductible in case of a diving incident.

Is DiveAssure good on the medical assistance as DAN?

What other options are there for dive insurance that have the dedicated medical consultation available?

Hate to sound like a broken record, but...
Contact DAN.

I will contact DAN but was wondering about any other insurance providers and peoples experience with DiveAssure as well.

The hotline is available to anyone anywhere anytime. You don't need to be a DAN member, or buy insurance through them to use it. I know, I used it once (and argued with the Dr. on the line for about half an hour before he finally convinced me over the growing ringing in my ears to visit the local clinic, which luckily had a chamber). He even followed up with me about a week later to ask about outcomes.

I never considered DAN insurance because my Canadian insurance through my work covers me. In fact they didn't blink at reimbursing me the USD4000 for the chamber ride, and for the travel expenses to return early from vacation, including 1 week's charges for the last-minute cancelled hotel/unlimited diving package - a total of about USD 6k.

So I was happy with my insurance, and never felt the need to get DAN insurance, but I did become a member because what DAN does is just plain good for scuba diving and scuba divers.

Cheers,

We should have asked where abouts you are actually hanging your hat?
