Unfortunately the cruise ships feed the economy of the island. Imagine "Sunday in Cozumel" seven days a week. Many restaurants will be closed. Taxis are scarce. Shops, including pharmacies, that sell the items that everyone, including locals and divers, needs and wants will be on restricted access. Mega and Chedraui (sp?) will cut back because no one will have any money. The cruise ships and their passengers drop tons of money in Cozumel, like it or not, which makes it easier and cheaper and nicer for all of us divers.

I think it's irresponsible to refer to people who are just trying to have fun in a different way than us divers as @BoundForElsewhere has. I agree that the cruise ships are contributing more to the declining health of the reefs than the divers, and reduced cruise activity may be good for Cozumel, but let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

I did not mean to disparage the cruisers. They are just regular people having fun in the best way they know. It was more a statement on what happens when you put too many people together on a floating petrie dish with very limited resources to manage any sort of outbreak, build up of waste, etc.

Cozumel found a way to survive before the pod people came. The cruise ships are a source of destruction.

There's a big difference between "surviving" and prospering. We all hate taking any form of pay cut. Once you've had a pay cheque you base your decisions on how to live on it not on a decreasing amount down the road.

My first visit to Cozumel was in 1986. In 1990 I remember sitting in a restaurant watching the tourists come off the cruise ship. Cozumel's economy is based on tourism. Divers are tourists. Cruisers are tourists. I know some shop owners in Cozumel. They close their shops when the cruise ships are not docked. The neighborhood bodegas support families who support businesses that are designed for tourists. Granted there are a lot of tourists at the resorts who came by air. Based on the pandemic hysteria how long will it be before the airlines cut back? There is no right answer

Odd question. We are now considering Cozumel again with lack of cruises. Looking as early as next week. Maybe we are not the only ones?

Are all ships canceled? We were avoiding because of "cruise people" / Corona concerns

No, "all" ships aren't canceled. Carnival Princess and Viking have halted operations for at least 6 weeks.

Royal Caribbean has just announced a 30 day shutdown of all US based cruises.
