Piranha also has what they call the Diver's Holster that looks pretty interesting.

My first tech shorts were the DGX ones. They are the same as the Highland ones.

I used them for a year or two, but never really liked them. Too buoyant. Slide down too easily.

Then I started working for a shop and was able to buy a pair of the ScubaPro pocket shorts at employee cost. I like the SP shorts a lot! They are much thinner neoprene. They seem to stay up pretty well. And they have good pockets.

I ended up using the SP shorts as my only exposure protection on my lower body (other than shoes) when diving in Utila last month. They were great like that, or over a wetsuit.

They're more money than the DGX/Highland shorts, at $85. But, still not bad. Worth the extra money, to me.

I have the Scubapro shorts and learned an expensive lesson that everything in my pockets need to be clipped off.

I had my wet notes (Halcyon, the most expensive kind!) in them and did an amazing current junkie dive hooking into the reef watching mantas swim by. After detaching and swimming out into the blue, I encountered a down current. Got out of it just fine but back at the boat I realized my notes were missing. Checking a video of myself from the dive, I saw the notes peeking out of the pocket, with the flap loose!

I've been looking at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S52XNZ9 (specifically the top version) as it can be sized to the user a bit better than most and doesn't trap air/water. I'd rather avoid the velcro, but it's the best from what I've seen out there so far.

That being said, I have not bought it yet.

I've been very curious about those. They appear to be a good option without adding too much buoyant neoprene... I had heard some reports that they are not the most stable on the legs (i.e. twisting what whatnot), but don't have any first hand knowledge or experience with them myself. If you ever decide to take the plunge, please report back your experience. :)

I have looked at those longingly as well, but then I look at every velcroed underwater item I have and I just know its going to lose adhesion and annoy me dead in a year or two. Even my Apeks shorts' velcro is getting there now, but those are just for snug fit, the belt holds them on so it is liveable.

I used Highland shorts initially when diving wet then found the ScubaPro ones which are perfect and less buoyant.

Well, before I bought this

I would grab a newish cordura sports bag from the junk shop pull it apart
and take all my clips, velcro, drings, webbing, and stuff to the sewing lady.

Were you having the shorts made from the cordura fabric along with the rest of the nice bits n pieces?

I've really considered learning how to make shorts for exactly this reason. I dive 3mm in the tropics and really don't want to add any more buoyancy, and want to be able to use the same "pockets" without a wetsuit too. I've always liked the Irikonji shorts, but they're no longer available.

I have these IST "holster" style pockets and I prefer them over the neoprene full shorts. You can adjust the tightness on the waist and around each leg so it really allows you to position the pockets wherever you want them and they stay there. I could never find a pair of shorts that stayed put.
