Man, I am so thankful that I'm allowed to bicycle a couple hunnerd miles a week !!! (and now my gym is open again, too). I have a ton of bike-junky friends on the isla, that sadly aren't able to train and race right now. I'd be losing my mind if I couldn't ride and had to sit around staring at the walls for months !!!
Just being able to do an island lap every day, would make it so much more tolerable (and it's totally absurd that they're prevented from doing that).
All of us are having to do things that from an individual perspective make no difference to public or personal health.

It really is a difficult call for everyone and there are indeed so many conflicting opinions. ‘When it’s safe’ is such an ambiguous statement, what people really mean is ‘when I personally adjudge it to be safe’ My mother is insistent that all international travel should be banned for 24 months from April 1st 2020. No questions. Only domestic tourism allowed.

I doubt we will see a consensus of opinion regarding the correct opening date for years..

I wish that doing those things from an individual's perspective would it make it seem worthwhile.

FYI - some things to consider and be respectful of.

We all want to return to work and we are GRATEFUL that some of you want to come back as soon as possible to suport your friends on the island, but there are some things that seem to be forgotten when it comes to your favorite vacation spot.

Cozumel is not Disneyland - it is full of real people living real lives with real obligations, concerns and difficulties. You coming back to Cozumel before the island is ready creates MORE hardships for people.

A "reopening" date of June 1 (which now I am hearing as of today is being pushed back) does not mean a free for all. Keep in mind that Cozumel is WEEKS behind the USA and Canada in this. Did your lives in the USA and Canada go back to a free for all - life as usual - business as usual on the day your city/state started reopening? I know the answer to that is NO!

WHEN Cozumel GOVERNMENT (not someone on facebook or the tourism council or a specific hotel or dive operator) says the island can reopen, then it will be in phases with essential businesses first and at limited capacities. Think about what limited capacities mean for a dive shop. If we are only allowed to have 2 passengers + crew on the boat, do you think we are even breaking even? In good times we can't break even with 2 passengers and particularly not now. And I don't know any Cozumel business that can take on additional and unnecessary losses in the form of out of pocket expenses to take a couple of people diving. In other words, it would cost them more to take 2 people out than to not send the boat out at all. In fact, I won't be surprised if we all have to raise our prices and make cuts elsewhere to get through this until things stabilize.

Please also keep in mind that with the shutdown, businesses don't have staff working, that includes office staff - so be mindful of bombarding them with daily e-mails asking questions that none of us have the answers to yet and furthermore, don't get "pissy" when you don't get a response back right away - with no income, we aren't staffed as usual!

Most hotels are not even considering opening until June 15 or July 1 in many cases.

Also, think about where you are coming from? Are you coming from or through a hotspot that could potentially and prematurely bring more exposure to the local people?

We are just as anxious to get back to work as all of you are to go on vacation - but let's please keep the priorities in order - and that is human safety and well being. Wouldn't you rather spend your vacation dollars to come back when we can all receive you and provide the services you are accustomed to - restaurants open, beaches open, tour operators operating back to normal? It does't have to be a competition or bragging rights to say "I was one of the first to go to Cozumel after COVID-19"

Thank you for your patience as the island recovers too!

I’m a bit lost now...is this dude a valid source? Or is he a tourism guy saying that cancun is opening with no authority.. is the governor in charge, or is he just a governor of a province and the decision actually lies with a higher power?

Carlos is the governor of Q Roo, it seems the decision is in his hands along with the local mayors.....

They seem to be full steam ahead with this opening on some limited basis.

Xacarat issued some letter saying two places opening on June 15th but I haven't heard of any places or dates before that - your guess is as good as any. They seem to be still saying local limited opening on the 1st - I can only hope that includes the marine park but there has been no mention at all of that.

They mention this stop light thing but no word of what it takes to change the light color....

As of today, most active cases to date in Q Roo, most in Cozumel, most in Playa and almost the most in Cancun.........

Kk..I’m confused about @Christi message. Does she mean don’t come even though the governor is saying do come and they have opened the hotels and airport? Or just don’t come now even though the governor is saying do come?

and if so, then when should people come? Who can give the green light as to when it’s appropriate to come? And where will it be appropriate to come from? If the governor etc aren’t the yardstick, then everything is ambiguous.

I have friends in the industry in Coz who are saying ‘get your @ss down here as soon as the governor opens us up, social distance properly and spend your money, we have people we need to pay/support but don’t come if you are symptomatic ,but I don’t want to come down if the governor and hotels are saying ‘we are open for business’ but then you are getting egged in the street by random people because they don’t think you should be there...

My Mom has a 4 1/2 year life expectancy. She has no interest in spending half of it locked down.

Random people in the street in the Cancun area are wondering how they will feed their families. The only way they can do that is if tourists return. It is not like here where unemployed people are making more than they did working. I just spent an hour or more chatting with a good friend who depends on tourism dollars. Reality is that everybody there except the independently wealthy or people with pensions depend on tourism dollars. My friend is wondering about moving back to Yucatan and trying to raise enough chickens and corn to survive. Problem is that as soon as tourist return some of them will get infected. And that will stop everything.

So equally ambiguous....it seems there is no right answer.

‘come and spend your money to help us but definitely don’t come because it will endanger us and you. Do not believe the tourist agency or cultural representatives when they say that the hotels will be open on a certain date, only the governor can decide that, but when he does decide and says you can come On that date and the hotels will be open, don’t come... We look forward to not seeing you soon or later’
