Hello. For many years.....I have eaten Bananas for their Potassium content to help prevent leg cramps, and I drink a lot of water to stay hydrated.
I was curious......?
Is there anything that you eat specifically in preparation for a dive.

chocolate and almonds with maybe some dried cranberries thrown in.

I saw the title of your post and thought you meant artemia. (Sea monkeys) :D
Diatoms. They love diatoms. Chaetocerus or Thalassiosira sp.
 
As always, the answer is “it depends”. As an avid runner but not to the point of hydration and electrolyte imbalance, I subscribe to the neuromuscular fatigue pathway for the cause of MY exercise associated muscle cramping, and what works for ME is a sharp taste sensation to break the cramping reflex. People have used pickle juice for this, but as it is difficult to carry pickle juice during a long run, I use candied ginger. YMMV.

if your focus is primarily in preparation of potential leg cramping, here's a product that may be worth a consideration. As a disclosure I have zero affiliation with this company, but the founders of the company are professors in the field of ion channel research (one who won the Nobel prize for the first resolved ion channel structure), who used to be friends and colleagues of my own boss when I was in an ion channel research lab myself at Harvard (actually involved in research related to the channels targeted by this potion, which appear to be TRP channels, specifically TRPV1 and perhaps TRPA1). I encourage you to take a look at the science section of the website, and perhaps take a look at some of the scientific articles mentioned in the references.
The product is called hotshot: HOTSHOT | Scientifically Proven to Tackle Muscle Cramps and Soreness
While I have not tried this product myself, the founders are certainly highly respectable scientists. I don't know the proprietary composition, but you might try some homemade concoction that may mimic the ingredients, which I suspect contain capsaicin (TRPV1 agonist, TRPV1 is known as the capsaicin receptor), and most likely some TRPA1 agonist (not sure which, could be mustard oil, or another, as this channel is sometimes referred to as the "wasabi receptor", and mustard oil is its most commonly used agonist in electrophysiology experiments). Hence why the name hotshot I guess. In any case, the ingredients are dosed in a proprietary cocktail, so you might want to try and see if it works for you, or drink some hot sauce before and after effort to see if this seems to work for you at all :) Obviously, there may be different or additional ingredients to this thing, and the dosing may be critical, but there's no harm in trying your own recipe, or just buy a sample to try. My two cents.

The rest of your post is all well and fine, and I'm intrigued, but I just had to quote and shorten your post just for the hot sauce bit.... You're on!! I'm willing to give the hot sauce chug a try before a dive!(when we're allowed to dive in PH) If nothing else, could help prevent the dry mouth effect :D I'm a bit curious what it might do for my SAC though.... Oh well, all the more reason to try it out!

Yeah, as I said, since I don't know the particular ingredients or dosing at all, inefficacy of a homemade cocktail may not mean that this product doesn't work. This is just my guess as to what generally is in it. But give it a go, I might too.
Although, careful with the dosing (start low and go crescendo maybe), you might not want to soil that wetsuit, or worse, drysuit, during your dive :) Maybe a little tabasco and wasabi in the morning coffee?

:rofl3: Yes, I think you're right, better to be a bit cautious.... Thankfully I am in Philippines, so warm water diving, and I can test this in boardshorts, so I wont have to deal with a severely soiled wetsuit, should the worst occur. I'm originally from Arizona, and quite enjoy my hot sauce.... I think I've got a few sauce candidates available here, I'm willing to go for it. It might be some time from now, but I will report back when I get the opportunity to try it out :D.

That last part got me thinking a bit.... wasabi coffee.... by gosh, that's just crazy enough it might work!

The Hotshots thing does sound pretty interesting, though I'm not likely to have access to it out here. I will suggest it o my brother back in AZ though, he's a kinesiologist and paramedic, he might be quite interested in this.
