SI-5 dry glove system

Greetings All,

I picked up a used DUI CF300 with the SI-5 glove system installed. I had a small leak that appeared to be coming from the glove cuff. I need to replace the gloves. I looked up the instructions for the system but it does not state if a specific glove is required. It does state that a wrist seal can be used in place of the glove. I have since removed both gloves which left a residue on the ring. I have 4 questions

1. Will the standard scubaboard glove recommendations work for this system?
2. What exactly are the attributes we need in dry gloves? For instance, I see the Ansell g17 is latex with 30.00 mil thickness. My local Menards sells a neoprene/latex blend glove that is 28.00 mill thickness but they are "flock-lined".
3. What should I use to get that sticky residue off of the ring? The manual states the gloves should have been removed if not diving for several weeks. My guess these gloves have been on for a long time.
4. If I ever just wanted to put latex wrist seals over the rings it looks like I just buy standard seals. Is this correct?

I had hoped someone would have had some insight into this dry glove system, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised since I could find very little information online about the system.

A few things I learned.

This dry glove system is horrible when it comes to ease of use. I spent an hour trying to get the gloves/ring onto the suit. The instructions say to bend the attached suit ring into an oval (which is flexible like most systems) but man was it hard to get the round gloves/ring into it. The instructions said to use diluted dish soap but I don't think that helped much. The glove kept sliding off the ring. After a few leak test with diluted dish soap, the gloves seem to not be leaking. I guess we will see when I get the suit wet again.

When it comes to the gloves themselves, I ordered a pair of atlas 620 which looked similar to the original DUI gloves attached. I ordered large based on the glove size listed on the DUI gloves, but the gloves were much smaller. The Large atlas 620 will work but I will need to use a thinner glove liner.

Depending on how long these gloves work without developing leaks, I might need to consider finding out if I can get the current attached inner ring removed and have something else installed.

Thanks, I saw that thread. The link to the gloves in the thread was not active. It also didn't really address any of the questions I originally asked.

For cleaning the rings I ended up having to use a little acetone to get the sticky residue off the rings.

I’m not versed in this system, I assume it’s a Si Tech system, like the glove lock but not sure. Does it use a large o ring to hold the gloves to the glove ring? More pictures would help, the suit side glued “stiff” rings, the seal base rings and the glove side ring. I think the Si tech site still has info on the older stuff.

Ok, it looks pretty simple in concept and standard gloves like your atlas should be fine. There are much better systems out there that don’t leave the glove on the suit, not having gloves on makes things easier to set up but so long as you get all of this set up right (no system is easy to get the gloves onto the rings but most are very easy to use once the glove is on) it should work well.

I did have some pictures of the outer ring. Looking at these pictures, I should have tried to clean the outer ring out before putting the gloves in. Oh well. I suppose with practice I will get quicker at removing and adding them.

The Atlas 620 gloves should work ok with the SI-5 system. I may be wrong but I believe the SI-5 dryglove system was designed to be attached to the suit before donning and stay attached unless replacing the gloves or swapping them for wrist seals. There are other/newer systems on the market that are much more user friendly and permit the diver to remove the gloves easily after a dive.

I personally dive with the si-tech qcs oval system with silicone wrist seals, for a dryglove system I have the Waterproof Ultima DGS which works great. I would also recommend the Rolock90 system. The Rolock90 system can be purchased with the PU ring that is the base of the Si-Tech QCS Oval system that gets glued into the sleeve of the drysuit. The PU ring can also be purchased through Si-Tech dealers so that you can choose between the other systems that are designed to mate with it (Si-Tech Antares, Si-Tech Virgo, Ultima DGS, Fourth Element Ellipse, Rolock90, perhaps others).

The dryglove and cuff systems I mentioned above are just an example, there are other systems available with different means of attaching, each has pros and cons and would be best for you to do some research and then ask focused questions....

....but if you are going to use your current system it would probably be best to install the gloves and leave them in place until they need to be replaced, or install wrist seals on your system and use a latex glove that can be pulled over the wrist rings and secure it in place with an appropriate size o-ring for safe measure.

The SI-5 system looks a lot like a combination of the the Si-Tech rubber cuff ring coupled with the rigid round ring from the their quick cuff system. A look at the Si-Tech modular solutions web page indicates that the round rigid ring is compatible with both systems.

There are folks on Scuba Board who have used various dryglove systems and have migrated to the pull-over type system for simplicity and in their opinion its reliability.
