I'm planning a solo Keys wreck dive for the beginning of July.

One tactic I am using when researching solo friendly dive ops, is to look at their course offering list and see if they offer the SDI Solo Class (or Padi Self Reliant class etc). If they offer the solo class, and you have the solo cert, I imagine they would allow you to dive solo on their boats.

I called Horizon Divers in Key Largo (who offer the SDI Solo class) and they booked me on a two tank trip diving solo after I told them I had the solo cert (they initially said no before I told them that). It seems that solo cert will actually prove useful for something! They did however specify recreational profile dives rather than tech / Deco, so I will have to see how that goes when I get down there. They were very helpful on the phone and I am looking forward to diving with them. Hopefully it will be an op I can plan to dive solo with again.

So I dived with Horizon Divers yesterday and had a great experience. They checked my solo card (it is starting to justify me getting it) and I was good to go. I rented a pair of manifolded double ALU 80s from them. There ended up being just four of us on the boat doing a double dip on the Spiegel. One buddy pair, and two of us solo diving. The Captain (Jeff) was awesome and super helpful. We spent the surface interval talking about his Advanced Wreck class which I am planning on taking next year. I highly recommend Horizon Divers. They are tech and solo friendly!

I gave up on trying to find "solo friendly" dive ops.

Now I go aboard the dive boat and find a couple with whom I buddy up. I let them know that shortly after descending, I will separate and go my own way.
