I have a friend whose daughter completed the elearning and pool work, but due to COVID, has been unable to do the open water dives. Is there a time limit for when the open water dives need to be completed? If so, is it from when elearning started/finished or pool work started/finished?

Any exceptions due to COVID?

thanks!

If it's PADI, I think open water referral is valid for up to 12 months.

I assume it is SDI, since the post is in the SDI forum.
If PADI, there is NO time limit if the OW dives are done by the same instructor or shop.
A referral to a different shop is 12 months from the date of the last confined water session.
One trick is to try and get (and probably pay for) a pool refresher from the original shop....that restarts the 12-month referral clock.

Hey! I am the friend whos daughter needs her open water dives! If that is the case, that is fantastic! she completed her confined/pool work at the end of July 2019. We were planning to do the 4 check OWD's in Key Largo around April/May, but when CV-19 hit and they shut the keys down, that went out the window. She just did a refresher about 2 weeks ago with the dive shop she did the pool work with and completed all her tasks with flying colors. So if the above reply is correct (tursiops) then she should be good to do her check off dives this july....correct?

I'm sorry, I do not know the SDI rules on referrals, and especially I do not know if any rules have been relaxed due to COVID-19. You should check with the shop where she did her training and refresher, and at the very least perhaps get a new referral with the refresher date on it. And then make sure whatever shop you are going to will accept that referral. SDI uses SDI-to-SDI referrals, and also something called a Universal Global Referral. You will find all this easier if the shop you are going to for the OW dives is also an SDI shop. Good luck!

I have no experience with RR but have heard good things about them. If schedules do not align, you may consider Horizon Divers. I have witnessed them certifying several minors over the years - most recently a ninth grader two days ago. They have their act together. They are a PADI shop so your original instructor and evaluating instructor will need to complete the SDI Global Referral Form. If you have an SDI log, a copy may be in it already. Good luck.
