Perhaps I misunderstand. Are you talking about taking the naked TG-6 without a housing to more than its 15m rated depth, all the way to 40m recreational depths?

Ah no. I meant I fully trust using the housing to go beyond the limits of the camera alone. :)

OK. Sorry for the confusion.
It is just that I know a lot of people who refuse to use a housing....and go as deep as they want....and think nothing of it. After all, they tell me, the camera is waterproof!

I have a Canon G7X in a Nauticam housing with the vacuum check. It gives me confidence when I see the green light. It saved me once when I had a minimal leak from a fiber caught in the O-ring.

I bought my wife the TG-6 as her first underwater camera. I bought the Olympus housing as I thought the waterproof nature of the camera would be protective and because of the low overall cost of the system.

I have the Olympus housing, it works. I can be a bit careless and it has leaked a couple of times, this is the joy of having a cheap waterproof camera inside. Even at depth, you are only talking about a tiny increase in pressure unless you totally forget to put the O-ring in the main seal.

What I would be considering is ergonomics. I find the Olympus housing annoying, but don't have much to compare it to. Have a look at the other housings, play with the dials with gloves on and see which works best. If the more expensive housing is easier, I say go for it.

I have a few dozen dives on the TG-6 & PT-059 Combo and the housing is solid and well built. Even at only $250 more for the Kraken, you can almost buy a second TG-6 as a backup. I see the attraction of the aluminum housing, but unless you’re doing some seriously rough entries/diving, the plastic of the PT-059 is quite robust. Really a toss-up. I agree that ergonomics are important so as someone else said, you might want to try out each with gloves, etc. depending on how you will dive. I wasn’t thrilled with the PT-059 shutter lever, but found an extension that makes on much better. Either housing will serve you well.

I've been diving the TG-6 and PT-059 combo for a year now and have no complaints about the housing and have had no issues at all underwater (or on land, but ... obviously). The thing is, cost of camera and housing was a lot less than the cost of any aluminum housing here in Canada.

As for form factor, my reason for choosing the TG-6/PT-059 was the small size and overall thinness of the housing. I bought it as a "scooter camera" and wanted as low a profile as possible.

I have used our two Olympus housings (PT 058 for TG4 and TG5) well below their rated depth (as deep as 230') with no issues. I like the ergonomics on the Olympus housing and see no reason to spend more $. I also like the small size as I dive with it clipped off and just unclip it to take pictures. I am a diver who takes pictures underwater and have no pretense that I am making art.

YMMV,

Jackie

I've had a TG-5 with the PT-058 housing for several hundred dives; and I've used the same PT-058 housing with a TG-6 for over a year now; about 50 dives. No complaints or problems.

I wouldn’t buy any housing without a vacuum/alarm system. I honestly don’t know why anyone would. It’s like a car without seatbelts.... mind you. The phrase ‘i don’t see the need to spend the extra money’ doesn’t really live in my vocabulary when it comes to underwater photography.

I’ve seen more than one person ruin at least the first few days of a $5k+ trip with a flood because they had previously decided to save a couple hundred bucks on equipment.
