So, just got certified and looking at purchasing my first set of gear. I have a buddy who has the following setup that'll sell me for a good price.
Mares V16 SCS Titan
Mares protonXL
Oceanic Slimline 2
Aeris Oceans 5 BCD
He'll also throw in 2 steel tanks that'll need inspected.

Most my diving will be warm water and a combination of salt/fresh as I live in central Texas.
I was leaning towards buying a Deep 6 regulator setup (perhaps the DGX rebrand) and a DGX Single BP/W setup. Combined that would likely run ~$900 vs the above package for less than half.

Thoughts? How do those regulators compare to the DGX or Deep6? I'm also open to HOG or other options. Anyone local to central Texas have a BP/W that I could try out?

define "good price"

With gear purchases you need to begin with the end in mind.

None of that gear is on a list of anything that I would recommend someone to purchase. If he's asking $200, then it's worth a discussion, but without that, we can't really help you

it heavily depends on the steel tanks in question. big difference in value for a pair of hdg 3442 psi hp100s vs some beat up lp72s with 1/2 inch necks.

but 400 for the mares regs and the aeris bcd is way more than fair market value. aeris is gone as a brand and mares doesn't hold great resale.

$300... I'm sure it'll include other misc items such as weights, etc...

The other thing I'm considering is what computer to buy. I'm leaning towards Shearwater and trying to determine if I want AI now or later (Peregine vs Perdix AI)... I may consider buying a cheaper non AI computer ~$200-250 now and buying the Perdix AI later though (which perhaps the Perdix is due for a new revision anyhow).

How old is that gear? Ex. The BC is a 5+ year old model. Has the gear been inspected and serviced regularly?

It's fairly old. I think he bought the BCD about 6 years ago... the rest not sure about. I imagine it's been serviced a few times, but likely nothing in the past 3-4 years which is likely about how long ago it's been since used. If I bought it, I'd def take the regulators in to get serviced.

Yeah...I’d pass. If you can swing it (it sounds like that is the case), start out with a nice new gear setup (ex. Deep 6) so you don’t have to waste you time and money early on doing repairs and attempting to source parts.

Most my diving will be warm water

Warm water means that almost every regulator is good and that any 3mm or 5mm suit will be good

So if I buy new...
Deep6 vs Hog vs DGX vs DiveRite vs... I'd like to stay in that general price range and would like a company that offers a course or is at least open to self-service.

BP/W Setup/brand... Hog vs DGX vs DiveRite... not sure how much difference there really is between all of them outside of price.

I'll likely just be doing recreational diving for now, but would like to get into some level of tec diving including wrecks/etc.

Also any recommendations on a 3mm wetsuit? I'm 5'11, 270 (though working on dropping that some more... down from 320 a year ago though).
