Certified Open Water on June 10th of this year. Just 9 days short of my 61st B-Day.

Since then I've achived Specialty Diver status, 4 specialty courses, 3 different quarry location weekend dive trips Mermet Springs Ill, Blue Water Park, Pelham AL, and Martha's Quarry, Mt Juliet TN, and am 8 dives away from my Advanced Open Water. (I'll get that my next dive wekend , 4 dives each day.

The irony of this ? Since I was a little kid in the 60's I wanted to be a certified scuba diver as well as a member of the Submarine Service.

I earned my Dolphins when I was 19
I earned my Open Water cert at 60.

I tend to do things backwards.. <LOL>

You can do it !!

Wondering how many get certified at this late an age. So far i really enjoy it and am currently working on my AOW..I own my own boat in the western long island sound and dive off it as often as i can but often wonder if i'm a little crazy to start such a journey at this late an age.

Not crazy. I did it. Always swam and snorkeled...just never got around to scuba. I have 60 plus dives in my first year of certification. Hoped to have more but COVID slowed my roll. I highly recommend going for AOW and nitrox certification. Next on my list: rescue

Hey Stephen, weather permitting we are heading to the Gwendoline Steers on Saturday. You're welcome to join. We can meet at the Scotch Caps and motor over together and raft up at the wreck. Timing is such it will be a low tide dive.

Slack tide is a real plus for the GS wreck and the trick is to stay off the bottom. The wreck is very very silty and the water clouds to zero vis if it is disturbed.

This current measurement station is pretty close to the wreck and is what I use for a guide: current predictions: Eatons Neck Pt., 1.8 miles west of, New York Current
If I'm reading that right we have a 12:56 pm slack? If so what time would we meet at the Caps?

I did the swim/snorkel/body surf, etc. thing too since childhood. But lived inland up North in Canada age 23 until age 51. Moving to the coast was the reason I got certified. Before that, I gave it very little thought as it made no sense to me. Diving in cold Northern lakes had no appeal, nor did diving once yearly in the tropics as a "vacation" diver. That didn't seem safe, though I couldn't put it into words at the time and didn't know what a vacation diver was.
