I suppose that you paid your deposit by credit card or other means with disputable charges and refunds?

Scuba Club just doubled down. I was due to stay there next month with my partner and we were going to use our credit from the reservation they cancelled in March and only gave us one year to use even though Hawaii hasn't opened up yet.

So I am optimistically heading back to Cozumel in October, but my partner isn't. He just can't take 14 days off work to quarantine. Scuba Club added a single person penalty to the rate (which made it the same price as if I was going with my partner), still isn't serving dinner, if I was using the credit they told me I had to use the entire credit on the trip in October or I'd lose it, and told me I still had only until March to use it if I didn't use the credit for the October trip.

I told them that the credit needed to be extended past March since there are places that still are not open and people can't travel. That if they weren't willing to extend the credit for an additional year, my partner would be challenging the charge on his credit card.

Anyone who is criticizing Blue Angel for issuing a credit good for TWO YEARS isn't dealing with Scuba Club and their credit of one year from the date of the original reservation.

I've been criticizing BA for their policy and this highlights even more why it is important to oppose all such customer unfriendly policies before they take hold and become accepted as a new baseline. A customer unfriendly policy at one place should not be viewed acceptable because another place has an even more customer unfriendly policy. If some other place had a draconian policy of keeping the money and not extending any credit at all, would that make you ok with Scuba Club since at least you aren't dealing with that other place?

Sometimes all you can do is vote with your feet.

You vote with your feet and speak out loud so others can vote with their feet.
I will do just that. I have no problem with Blue Angel's policy on reservations and I will be staying there again as soon as I can make it back to Cozumel.

Something I have done in the past in other locales and I suspect others do as well is to make more than one reservation in different hotels for the same time period while I am deciding where I want to stay, and then cancel the ones later that I reject. One thing that their policy does is to discourage that and requires that you are serious about planning to stay there. It presents no problem for me, but DSFDF and YMMV.

not this guy. never done this in my life. no offense but this is one practice that really jerks my chain. people seem to do this a lot today. they do it with restaurant reservations, golf tee times, rental cars.

Future credits are no good if the hotel/dive op goes out of business before you get there. Blue Angel is burning through deposits for future reservations to pay for present expenses.

@P-Dog

I would get while the gettin’ is good.

Use your credit as soon as practical.
And
Dispute the charge - you never know - you may recover

Single supplement? That’s interesting in the current environment.

What business wouldn’t extend a credit for two years as opposed to one? Two and they get to hold your money - figurative, we know the cash has long since been spent - an additional year before the day-of-revoking comes. Worse case, they go belly-up in year two, never having had the consumer use their credit.

So why restrict a credit - a liability - to only a year. If I had borrowed $10k - on the same no interest terms that a resorts hold your money - from you and you said can we extend the repayment window to five years from one? Well, that’s fine with me, heck let’s go for twenty. Better yet, I’ll just keep your do-re-me.

In the current environment, use it or lose it within a year, increases the probability that the credit will expire unused. Travel is perhaps more difficult and some folks just will not travel.

From an economic standpoint, aggressive deposit practices usually work when their is high demand for a perishable product. In Cozumel there are rooms and dive slots a plenty - little reason to accept restrictive deposit policies.
