1200 HP on a 12 meters boat?
I have to agree with this.
BTW I am a licensed boat captain and yacth master I can navigate the world. In this part of the world boating at less than 200 mtrs (600+ feet) from shore has to be done at reduced speed (minimum steerage) and perpendicularly to shore, only to approach your intended destination. Any navigation at speed has to be done further out.
Just saying .... BTW boat do not observe dive flag limitation here as well...
Why? I'm considering putting 600 hp on a 7.6 meter boat. I'd put 900 if it was possible.

I think some of you are showing your boating ignorance.

It's like saying it's the keyboards fault for someone misspelling words. Or the gun's fault for someone shooting someone.

Out of curiosity, is the dive flag limitation only a recommendation or is it law and it can be enforced ?
In Italy is law and it is enforced, when they see you. Internationally it is the Alpha flag that means diver down. In costal water depends on jurisdiction on international waters is upon the flag state of the vessel .... (so it is unenforced). But diving in international waters is rare and uneducated boating beyond 12 miles usually ends badly for the boater ... and his/her unaware passengers.

Right, that's why putting guns in supermarket makes the US the country with the most people shot (intentionally or by accident).
You can put as many HP you want on a boat but the idea should be that it would depend upon the purpose of the boat. A recreational, good weather day out on a 7 meters boat requires very little power. On the other end on a drag boat you can put as much as regulations allow ...
I would not bring my family for a flight on a two seater jet, flying low level and pulling 9g turns but I brought them flying around in a nice Cirrus SR22GTS (350 HP) and that was also fun, and needs handling with caution.

Bottom line: a racing boat belongs in a racing course. If you use it for Sunday boating you will end up messing things up. The guy who did this mess, does not appear to be a stupid or a reckless person (by the linked article) but given the flat sea and the available power did it anyway.

I managed 130 MPH on my Kavasaki Ninja 750R (it was a Tom Cruise Top Gun like stunt at that time, it was 1991, I was young, had money and was in California and happened on I-5 and I-50) and since I have learned that, while we might be very well intentioned and saying is only reserve power ... that reserve get used and not to pull us out of a tight spot but just to put us there ....

Racing bikes, car, boat belong in racing courses .... you cannot see as much as needed in a see and avoid environment at high speed. I have some experience at 450 knots and above ... Trust me on this.

And :) Enjoy the boat!

Cheers

This has nothing to do with the boat and 100% with deliberate reckless operation of a vessel at high speed. This area has a bunch of fixed buoys to mark the shallow dive areas (like 22 feet) and the conditions were PERFECT! Flat, calm and unlimited visibility and multiple dive flags and paddle boards.

Flying down over the shallow reef like that through buoys and dive flags and paddle boards and kayaks, was beyond comprehension - AND the guy was a local and KNEW this was a super popular snorkeling area. He could have driven offshore for 20 seconds and then resumed the same heading and avoided all the reefs and people.

I have a friend who personally knows the boat operator - he says the guy has proven to be an experienced, skilled and responsible boat operator in the past- so this makes his actions even more unfathomable in my mind.

Sounds like you are there to enjoy the ride, as I would be. In the US, it may be 90 or more miles to the fishing site, meaning you either need a 45 knot boat or an overnight boat.

I have an overnight boat, as I don’t much care “to go fishing”, although I’m happy to chuck a spear once I arrive. Others want to get there, kill the fish, and be home for happy hour. Although it’s not my way, I don’t fault those who do.

I do not want to derail the thread on boating issues so I will stop commenting on boat styles ... after this :)
You know as well as I do that a fast boat is designed well differently to a boat able to hold any decent sea state ... being 90 miles away with weather that turned sour, 1200 HP will not help you if the boat hull si designed solely for speed and does not hold the sea.
Prefer the latter to the first. You cannot beat the weather once is upon you. You need to ride it.

Yep. People are busier than ever and most don't have the ability to overnight, yet need to travel fast to get to good spots far offshore and be home for dinner. This isn't some anomaly in boat building as suggested. Many boats, especially center consoles are built for speed.

Most of the commercial fishermen I know have since ditched diesels for offshore racing hulls and outboards.

I have retired friends that have no problem doing 7 knots in a diesel and taking a full day to get to the grounds. Wake up and fish for a day and another day to come back.

Cruising at 53 mph is a luxury most would love to have. If I could hit 40 I'd be happy, but I imagine 35 will be more realistic. I will never hit a diver. Not because of my boat, rather because I wouldn't drive it so recklessly near swimmers and divers.

It is the law here in Florida for the divers and snorkelers to have one and stay within a certain distance of the flag depending on the type of waterway and it is also law for boat operators to stay a certain distance away but the fines are negligible. Law enforcement does enforce this law on both parties when necessary but I personally believe that the penalties on boaters need to be increased, especially if multiple offenses are committed.

The Law:

Divers must make a reasonable effort to stay within 100 feet of the divers-down flag or buoy on rivers, inlets, and navigation channels. Similarly, any person operating a vessel must make a reasonable effort to stay more than 100 feet from the divers-down flag or buoy in these areas.

Divers must make reasonable efforts to stay within 300 feet of the divers-down flag or buoy on all waters other than rivers, inlets, and navigation channels. Any person operating a vessel on waters other than a river, inlet, or navigation channel must make a reasonable effort to maintain a distance of at least 300 feet from any divers-down flag or buoy.

In both locations vessels that approach within the required distance must proceed no faster than is necessary to maintain headway and steerageway.

Any violation of the law results in a noncriminal infraction punishable by a civil penalties and a requirement that the person appears before the county court. The bill also requires boater education and safety courses to include a component regarding divers-down buoys and diver-down flags.

Why is it a stupid style of boat? What did the boat do?

I feel its the opitome of greed, its like taking a nascar to the shops just cause I can. This is just my opinion and I am obviously at a different point in my life than you, I have children and hope to leave the world a bit better for them, driving 1200hp boats around just because I have "no time" is as far from sustainability as you will get. Calling us ignorant to boating is off the mark.
Just because you want to go offshore to fish at 53MPH does not mean that its the right thing to do.
You would think recent world events would show people that the current lifestyle trajectory has us on a one way track to a major extinction event.
