When inflating my very large DSMB I was using my drysuit hose which is on the left side..

But yesterday while practising at the lake with a stage cylinder, I noticed that the stage was in the way of the hose.

Is it more common or better to use your wing QD hose for this generally ? I guess I could also have a QD hose on the stage but I was wondering if there was a general accepted practice ?

Most wing LP hoses are so short that you'd have the bag right up in your face while inflating it.

couple things.

How big is this dsmb?
Why are you inflating a "very large" DSMB from depth instead of a small one to surface with, then having a "very large" one available for surface once you get there?
Is it a closed bottom, or is it an open baffle that you could inflate from a second stage?

It’s a large 6ft.

It is a closed one, I have also a slim 6ft that I usually use as my main DSMV. When I inflate my slim one from 20m I just inflate orally and it is fairly full at surface.

But I have a large 6ft non slim which is closed as well that I wanted to be able to inflate from depth as well, hence why I was practicing inflating it from a QD hose.

Are you saying that it is not the right strategy ?

I do not believe in inflating massive DSMB's from depth because they're a PITA to deal with as you've realized. I don't dive with a backup DSMB, I dive with a small 3ft skinny thing that I shoot from depth, and a big **** off monstrous thing that I only inflate at the surface as a "come find me, I'm lost". For that one, you have time to deal with it. Otherwise with the huge one, just inflate it from as deep as you can and you don't have to have that much gas in it with expansion.

Yes on my wing it is very close to my face but it is also out of the way of every other piece of equipment.

It requires a bit of pulling on the hose though.

Some good info here, Thanks Tbone, really stresses use the requirement for thinking about proper equipment for the job and it’s use.......

A trick that was taught to me by a pretty awesome diver:

Get an open bottom SMB.
Dump your wing into the SMB.
Let it fly!

Especially for those of us on breathers, this works awesome!

That makes sense, you stay roughly at the same buoyancy ... nice trick
