I just read they are a delicacy in Spain-a cross between a clam and a lobster in taste.
Your picture shows a flat shell. The Spanish GooseNeck Barnacle (percebes) is a very different animal.

Clusters of small round stalks with a toenail like pointy end. Very tasty.

Barnacles are relatively rare in the waters around Cozumel. Wooden pilings in the Gulf of Mexico waters off Texas and Louisiana are usually solidly encrusted with them.
