It does not make sense. No sail order in effect when we had 20 -50 K infections per day. We are at 100+ (just broke the 100k mark) and CDC lifts order. Are we going to have boats floating around looking for ports again if/when they have an outbreak?

I know the next few months the cruise industry will be running mock sails with crew and crew family (volunteers) to test protocols. They will rapid test all upon arrival. Just seems like $ outweighs health. I hope they have all their protocols working. Alot of Cozumel's people relay on this and it needs to be done correctly.

@ChuckP and others,

How you guys doing down there with infections? You guys holding steady or seeing the spike like many of the other places are?

Saw a news article today from the AP and it looked pretty grim. Assumed (hoped) that was related to mainland but thought I'd ask here since its been a few days on this thread.

Thanks in advance!!

i can't see how the cruise industry recovers for 10 years... but i also think ( no offence) people need to stop using the turn of phrase '$ over health' as a catch all etc.. i can fortunately hunker down, not work and wait this out even if it takes years, but for others...there needs to be some empathy to the situation.. it's just as likely to be 'bankrupcy over health' or 'suicide over health' or 'destitution over health' or 'homelessness over health' or 'loss of my family over health' etc...

I agree. It's not a universally binary choice between economics and health. As this thing drags on there have to be constant adjustments of approach to try to minimize the threats to both. Neither can be ignored.

I think they did a cruise recently (few weeks ago) out of Barbados. The way I understood it they had to have a negative test before boarding and were tested again upon boarding - a few days into the cruise, 6 people had positive tests - this boat had 63 passengers and if the picture was correct, it didn't look like some tiny ship.

My neighbor is the guy that docks the ships here - he was talking about some test cruises in Europe, first one was a disaster, second one made no stops and the third or others that made stops - the passengers were kept within a bubble, all tours were with sold thru the cruise and completed with cruise passengers only - straight back to the ship, no walking thru town.

I think you have to be realistic, we seen what happened on that original ship in Japan, you can't put 3500 people in an enclosed space and not expect a problem. Testing seems to be not so accurate so how the heck can you get non sick people onboard?

When this was all going on back in late February / March - I remember going past 3-8 ships in port here thinking OMG and in three weeks this place went to a ghost town. I thought we'd be back to ok by late summer, a friend hoped he'd have a decent December but now I think normal isn't coming anytime soon, I can't see high season in the Spring even - late summer maybe.

With that being said, I don't expect people to hide in the closet, I think you just have to be smart about things - elbow to elbow in a bar or standing in a buffet line probably isn't the smartest move. I just rode down Melgar, it's probably not 50% open but there's people moving around, it's like a slow day here. Most restaurants are open, they just aren't crowded, I think at this point all hotels are open. We have a huge advantage because most everything is outside or open air, it's not real crowded so I don't feel uncomfortable. There's people getting off the ferry snorkeling, the dive shops are working, some are really busy.

COVID here in Q Roo. I think is doing really well. Some people have been complaining lately that they've become slack about mask wearing but back here in town, I don't see that - I do see tourists not wearing them - I seen a group of ten walk into a bar, not a single one had a mask on. Right now, we are back to levels of active cases that we had at the beginning of May and back then we had a 6pm curfew and virtually everything was closed - now curfew is midnight and we're 60% open, I think that's pretty frickin good. There's this "R" number, the ratio of new cases to cleared cases, it's below 1.0 and has been - you can see in the stats that they are clearing old cases off the roles so what the real number is is unknown but it's easily under 1.0.

Wear a mask when you're walking around or around others - go get in your beach chair away from others and take it off, don't crowd into the bars or restaurants - when you're at your resort, follow those rules!! It's not that big of a deal and everyone wants you here but what we don't need here is the caviler attitude we hear of going on North of us, check that attitude at the gate when you get on the plane. We're doing great and would like to keep it that way. Come have fun, enjoy it, but please have some respect for those of us that live here.

I think Carnival understands the future. They have scrapped 12 of their monster boats…that means scrap iron.

And the world is a better place. Too bad that so much suffering and loss had to incur to cause that.

I'm looking forward to the vaccines making travel safer. I'm sure that will be many who skip those to keep us at risk, but not as much. I'd like to see proof of vaccination required for common carrier travel as well as immigration. I'd also like to see mask or face shield enforcement at home and there both.
