I can say that's not true.

Any post that offends anyone can be moderated, if reported. Ask me how I know that's true...
Offensive yes but I am referring specifically to off topic posts. I know my threads in the past have wandered wildly and usually to the benefit of the readers.

Offend was the word - to cause a person to be hurt or annoyed.

I had to look it up to be sure I used the proper word.

Apparently offensive and offend mean different things...

Certainly nobody enjoys being "moderated", whether justly or not. I can’t help but wonder how many who decided it was terrible here are now looking around and realizing they gave up on the best scuba forum going?

Certainly "be nice" is a great mantra, but where’s the fun in that? For me, trying to make the conversation about the issue and not a person seems like the safest path. That way there is a lot less opportunity for moderating. And the truth about an issue doesn’t have to be always "nice".

edit: isn’t it insulting when giant long posts are copy/pasted from the internet as if nobody else knows how to do a google search? :poke:

Idiots and jerks are everywhere. Diving in general appeals to gear heads, over bearing, know it alls.

How many threads have we seen that started out with a brand new diver asking an elementary question only to get talked down to and bombarded with technical rabbit holes and the ramblings of "tech divers" and "instructor professionals". It's pretty sad.

Why is it sad? Because, it is a form of intimidation. Which is threatening. Which is against the TOS.

I tend to avoid the "advanced" conversations, read more than I post, help where I can, and learn who the blow hards are.

That doesn't say I never want to mix it up with some of the jerks on here... and there are a few. And yes, i've had a post or two deleted before in dealing with them. And that's ok.

This thread I started when I first joined SB taught me all I need to know about people on this board. I learned how I should use/view SB, as it's only valuable once you understand the groupthink here...

I have to be honest, I am Italian-born (left the country decades ago) and when I saw a particular member being very derogative about being Italian with one of the nicest (Italian) people on here I was genuinely upset. There was no moderation in that case, but I don't particularly care because there is always the 'ignore' function, which I liberally use for all the rude people. I think if we all did that, moderators would have much less work, and some posters would be a much smaller inconvenience. Sometimes we are guilty of enjoying a fight, when in reality we should just let go.

Actually there was quite a bit of moderation in that case. Apparently, there was not enough or there was too much but it wasn't just right.

I'm listening, truly.

Please don't nuke this thread just because there's a bunch of off-topic silliness in it. The serious stuff is an important discussion. I'd like to see it stick around long enough for more people and moderates to weigh in on the discussion.
