Why do they persist in putting that useless "safety stop" display on these. I do not need to see that during the dive, at all. I only need to see a safety stop timer when I actually start the safety stop timer (or when it starts automatically). The way they have it on all the time reduces the size of what I actually do need to see, which is NDL.

There are only five things I need or want to see on the primary dive screen during the dive: depth, time, NDL, tank pressure, and an accurate estimate of gas time remaining to surface with my reserve intact (like everyone else can do but apparently Shearwater cannot). When I begin my ascent, add an ascent rate indicator and, when I reach the safety stop, replace NDL with the stop timer.

I don't want to see my mix, my MOD, my CNS, my tissues, what my safety stop is going to be, temperature, or any other such stuff. Those can be put on alternate screens to scroll to.

I always look at the Perdix AI and say, man, that display is just perfectly bright, sharp and beautiful. But then I see that I am stuck with the "safety stop" nonsense, a GTR that is not fully calculated, and extraneous information that is not essential, and I always hesitate to pull the trigger.

It wouldn't be hard to take my money, Shearwater, really . . . .

Well, not the Peregrine, as you need AI for tank pressure and GTR.

I’m really not sure why Guy is not happy with the GTR on the Perdix AI. Per the manual, GTR indicates the amount of time you can remain at the present depth before making a direct ascent @ 33’/min and surfacing with reserve pressure remaining in the tank. It does not include a safety stop in that calculation, but compared to the rest of the dive, the gas consumption at the safety stop is probably a minor concern. I haven’t brought my GTR down to zero, but I’ve had it down to a couple of minutes. Seemed accurate enough as I surfaced with more than reserve pressure after the safety stop.
 
The Scubapro Galileos and G2 can be set up to display this. Even better, they can be set to display "dive time remaining" which gives you the shorter of either the NDL remaining or the gas time remaining (which is calculated through the safety stop and to the surface). So, it is a simple depth/time/pressure/dive time remaining display instantly understandable. It is the best "lite" display imaginable and all you need to safely execute a RECREATIONAL dive. If you go into deco it switches to a more detailed display with the stop information, etc.

The Shearwater Perdix AI display is pretty darn good, but still more complex than needed in "rec" mode. Even on the Peregrine, the safety stop time is the same size and worse up above the NDL, making it confusing and requiring a few seconds of interpretation. Why is that "3:00" needed cluttering the screen and confusing the truly critical information during the entire dive?

Did Shearwater change their algorithm for GTR (or, maybe I just misunderstood it)? It used to be that you would set a reserve and the GTR would calculate time to reach the reserve at depth, not at the surface taking into account ascent rate and planned safety stop duration. All the other major brands have implemented the latter, and it is very accurate (for sure on my Galileo and from what I have seen of other brands). On mine, if I set a reserve of 500 and a safety stop of 5 minutes, the GTR reaches "zero" when it is time to ascend (which is always more pressure than the reserve) so that you reach the top with the 500. If I am deep or have been working hard, it might show GTR at "zero" when I have 800 psi, so that I reach the surface with 500. If I am shallow, it will zero out at maybe 600. Very adaptive.

What you describe is OK, but still not as good as other brands have done.
 
Any one know why the menu structure was changed besides in the areas of what was removed such as tech and RB. it would be wonderful if it was a mirror of the petrel, for transition purposes
 
I can probably tell you why @guyharrisonphoto is disappointed in Shearwater GTR, same reasons I am. So, rather than a Scubapro, like he dives, I have dived an AI Oceanic computer since 2002, about 1950 dives. The Oceanic ATR takes into account both your safety stop and any deco stops in the calculation. About 5% of my dives are light deco, generally less than 10 min. The Oceanic algorithm is quite accurate, I often end up +/- 25 psi from my end pressure on dives when I pay attention to ATR. I have been diving a Teric for about a year and a half, only about 200 dives. The Shearwater GTR does not take your safety stop into consideration. So, I run my Teric at an end pressure of 560 psi, to take he SS into consideration. For what it's worth, my Teric GTR seems low at the beginning of the dive, more accurate at the end. I have not figured this out yet. I intend on gathering some real data next time I'm diving. The other annoying feature for my Teric is that when you go into deco, the GTR simply disappears. Yeah, yeah, tell me this is a tech thing about gas planning, blah, blah blah. I have my RMV for my last 1450 dives and know accurately what my gas consumption is and I plan my dives. I did this well before I bought the Teric. I practiced Buhlmann for 3 years/600 dives with a Nitek Q before I bought the Teric.

I could go on about Shearwater only calculating SAC, because they don't think divers could accurately enter their cylinder volume and working pressure, but I won't. The calculation using the tank factor is very easy.

On the other hand, I absolutely love SurfGF. I use it all the time to help me decide when to surface from a dive close to NDL or light deco.
