@Diverdon,

Saw this on a newsfeed and was wondering if it's in your neck of the woods and if you have information on it?

Yes in fact I intended to dive it but it was removed before I could dive it. It went down on Friday, the weather was bad the next day when I went to look at it and those waves will pummel you against the rocks. I went back Sunday and I still wouldn't try it because the exit didn't look safe still. The next day there was a barge there pulling it out.

Interestingly enough, I took footage of the fuel slick and posted it on FB that Saturday. I received several calls, a few suggesting I take it down which I ultimately did. Not to save the owner from criticism, or anyone else for that matter. On Sunday when I went to see if the lake had died down enough to slip in between the rocks, a looky-loo came up in Converse Tennies, no gloves or hat doing a duckwalk wondering if he could see the wreck. It was bitter cold and the top of the break wall extremely slippery. I didn't want to be the reason some fool hurts (or worse) him or herself.

Funny thing is the local tv station reported no fuel lost. Tell me what you think that slick is.

Hard to tell in the video, is there a rainbow in the water or along the rocks? I've seen some phenomena with smooth water in rough seas that were not oil related.

Deep down I'm sorry that the wreck was removed. New wrecks are hard to come by.

Not only could you see it bubbling up from the wreck but the smell was undeniable. There was diesel fuel leaking from one if not both of the two 50 gallon tanks.
I too would like to have better wrecks in my immediate area but a new dirty wreck isn't welcome. In a neighboring underwater preserve they have a tug that was sunk as an artificial reef. It underwent extensive cleaning and at great expense.
If this tug was beyond repair I'd petition the underwriters to donate the hulk to Marquette's Underwater Preserve and seek to clean and prepare it properly.
Most of the wrecks in our preserve have been destroyed by wave, ice and time so a fairly intact wreck would be awesome.

Yes I've dove on the Selvick, Moore, and HB Smith (rov) when I was up there last. Liked everyone of them though only the Moore was the best natural wreck up there.

The Jenny Lynn in Duncan Bay foundered in 2011 (heck of a story) and a bunch of heavy fuel oil and diesel came out of her. Shes still at the bottom of the bay intact because they gave up on salvaging her. The Barbara Lynn was on the bottom for 20 years when we attempted to salvage her and she still had a couple hundred gallons of diesel in her.

Any chance of removing that fuel? It'll come out eventually.

The HB Smith has a pretty cool story too and its last harbor was Marquette. I didn't think Ken or Jerry released the numbers on that one though I do know a few others who have visited and filmed it. Do you have any footage?

I've not done much diving downstate so I'm not familiar with those wrecks. Never got past the Straights.

We got fined by the EPA when the fuel tank busted. About 300 gallons broke free. An idea was to drain it into a lift bag, but it didnt work.

I was with Crossman and Ken on the Smith. The ROV footage isnt all that good, but I have 8 hours of it if you're interested.

Many Lake Superior divers are not happy with the zebras in the lower lakes. So prepare yourself for that when you get down here. But late spring will bring visibility that can surpass the tropics...

I have witnessed the Zebra mussels in the straits and Lake Michigan. I just haven't been diving downstate much. They do tend to coat everything however thet don't seem to thrive here in Lake Superior.
If anything I'd like to visit Alpena as I have relatives in the area.
I did see some drop camera footage and possibly even some of your ROV footage but I forget the source. Do you have any footage on YT or Google? It's too back Ghost Ships collapsed years ago. I always enjoyed Stories like these.
