That's because you don't know how to play the game these days Dandy. Enjoy the 2% cash back ya get while those of us who know how to play the game keep flying for free. That 2% cash back is nothing compared to free travel on air miles for those who know how to play the game.
I think I understand the value well. I do spend a lot less than many tho which would mean less power in play. Still, I don't think that you get $20 value per thousand spent, including the add-on fees they charge when you redeem miles. You just rationalize the costs.

No offense DandyDon but you are an amateur regarding credit card sign up bonuses.
Ok, I do probably not play that game often enough. I did get a $250 cash discount on my next Cozumel flights with a new card signup.

Ha ha. You are playing the game!!!! We've been lucky to use miles quite a bit (not as much as some of you) but I can't see signing up for new cards right now to get miles and credit card use has been way down since last year - which on one hand means I should be saving money to spend on trips, but on the other hand is the reason I'll probably be paying more $$ for future flights.

I get a few miles by using my Fitbit and doing surveys - it would take years to accumulate enough miles just to fly a kite!!!

They may be worth as much as 1½¢ each, but that's generous. The add-on fees to redemption tickets vary a lot and can be expensive.

There may or may not be a travel surge in the future but I don’t think you can link it to current airfares or awards. Airfares and mileage awards have always had swings and seldom anything to do with travel demand.

in this case the lack of availability or increase in miles for awards could be due to the exact opposite- they foresee lower demand. Airlines don’t want non revenue flights so if long range revenue purchase of seats are done they would want to scale back non revenue seats accordingly.

another thing is they might foresee bankruptcy in which case they can maybe wipe out all the miles so why bear the cost of redeeming them?

I got 50000 miles for getting the Barclays AA CARD and another 40k from citicard when I spend 2k. I pay my house insurance so that's easy. I can get round trip to coz for 27.5k miles and $98. I cancelled the Barclays card and will reapply after required times up.

Yeah, the new card game is what I am weak on. Was that $2K in 2 months? It's rare that I'd meet that, except when my home insurance is due. I need to remember that then. But I got my $250 cash discount with a new AA card this month so it'll be a while. Can I cancel that card now and start the wait now or do I need to keep it or a year, then cancel & wait - and how long is the wait?

Yes you can cancel it as soon as you receive the miles. I think its 18 months or 2 years before can apply again.

We are still holding firm on getting fully vaccinated before we consider any domestic/international travel. Unfortunately, the vaccine rollout is slow here in Ontario and I fear that air travel will not materialize for us any time soon.
