It's possible the hacker who took over the mod account could have installed a script to serve ads and direct payment to his own external account.

Absolutely not. He used a data dump from a compromised site. That mod used the same username/password on a number of sites. He then simply googles the username and finds he has mod access. Mods can't access lower-level programming.

Or 2FA/MFA (2-factor authentication/ multi-factor authentication). This forum supports it, as do a lot of websites. If available I use it where possible. That and a password manager so that I can try and use a different password for every website etc. without having to remember them all!

I figured expiring passwords are probably cheaper than 2fa...
