I ran into the same thing you did when traveling to Ft. Myers back in Feb. I ended up taking a trip to the East coast with Scuba Outfitters of Naples. I met up with them at the shop in the AM and went to Ft Lauderdale to dive with Sea Experience. I found the folks at Scuba Outfitters to be very personable and knowledgable about local diving. They contend that there isn't much boat diving in the Gulf due to relatively short viz compared to the Atlantic.

That being said, on my next trip I'll probably head a little north and try my hand at shark tooth diving in Venice, not too far north of Ft. Myers.

Hope you have a great trip.

BTW, there is also an outfit that runs charters out of Marco Island (not too far from Ft Myers) if you really don't want the 2 hour drive to Lauderdale. Can't recall the name, and I've not dived with them. I just remember running across them in my search.
