One more question, what do you think of Julian Rocks diving at Byron's Bay? Is it any good? How long are the boat trips?

Good diving :) about 10 mins away. Temperate water though and can get chilly in winter. Also can be quite rough.

Well, after our trip to Maldives I consider DMs who are just gides a bonus :) My question on Beqa is, how good is their house reef? Is shore diving there any good?

There's a bit of fringing reef around. A few seahorses in the grass and I saw an octopus hiding in a bit of coral rubble. I only did a check-out dive on the house reef (had a leaky reg that needed testing), all the rest of my diving was out on the boat. It's not terrible for a house reef, but nothing to write home about.

      Hi,
You gave me some advice about Australia...Did you dive in Fiji? I'm looking for info on Beqa Lagoon Resort. The search on SB gave me one result from 2006, not much.

Was at Beqa Lagoon Resort in 2012. Resort was ok, but there were a few issues. At the time, they didn't offer nitrox at all, only air. My understanding is that's now changed and they have a nitrox compressor. Also, the guides were just guides. Don't expect any help with anything, they expect you to be self sufficient divers - although that too may have changed.

      Hey dude!
just read that u said a DM certifcation won´t be taken seriously if done in thai or indoneseia.
      Why is that?

It's cheap there for a reason, and lots of people go there for exactly that reason - it's notoriously easy to pass, and even if you're failing, a bit of cash in their hands will make sure you get over that hurdle. It's dangerous, and the dive community in the rest of the world is very much aware of it.

I know that locally in Australia, nobody wants to hire divemasters or instructors who did their training anywhere in SE Asia for exactly this reason. The training there is considered a joke.

If you just plan to use your DM training to work as a guide in SE Asia for a while you'll probably be ok, but if you actually want to use it to find work when you get back home, or in any other parts of the world, you'll be in for an uphill battle.
