LekicINC:
great thread. When I travel, I make sure I can do 2 things. Try new food and try new dives.
Winsu, any chance you can give me the name of a place like this in South Bali. Or if anyone else has any food recommendations for Bali, that would be great. Not interested in the stuff from the guide books, I want the real good stuff! I hear the food rivals the diving in indonesia...
The best Indonesian food is not served by hotel/resort or 5* restaurant; go to the specialist. We certainly have favourite restaurants but being local my recommendation is not for flabby belly.
Padang Food Restaurant - very tasty and pocket friendly.
Available in most cities in Indonesia. Unfortunately not in small villages like Tulamben and Menjangan area. Pamela has given the right description and nice picture to identify. If you dont choose from the display, they will serve you will all but small portion on the table. You pay what you consumed only. Steamed rice with beef rendang, grilled fish/chicken and vegetable will cost less than $3 or max. $5 for big restaurant.
Ikan Bakar (grilled fish) Jimbaran several restaurant at Jimbaran beach Bali, was our favourite; although still the food is excellent, nice ambient but more touristic and pricey; $10 15 /pax, more if you order lobster and wine.
Ayam Taliwang in Bali, you can find it at Jl. Imam Bonjol or the best at Mataram, Lombok. Baby chicken grilled or fried with special spices from taliwang, Lombok beware super hot and spicy but difficult to stop if you can survive.
KFC Kentucky Fried Chicken, seriously I am not joking, try the hot and crispy, served with sambal - chilly sauce - not available in USA or Europe. Even the OR is more tasty here;
No such restaurants at Tulamben, but you can visit Amlapura at night 30 minute drive and try the
Sate & Gule Kambing (satay & lamb curry) at the food stalls; choose the most crowded, near the shops. One complete set consists of steamed rice, 10 pcs satay and gule kambing will cost you less than $2. After almost a week in Tulamben with the resort food, this became our best food.
Babi Guling suckling pig, not our favourite as we dont eat pork but Anthony Bodouin (travel living) claimed as the best in the planet. Almost anywhere in bali city. Ask local for the best warung (small restaurant).
Ayam Betutu bali favourite, available in most local restaurant. if you cant find the warung selling this menu check on your hotel menu list; and try.
