Hi,

I'm a newbie to this forum and this is my first post. I'm a second year internal medicine resident at Case Wester Reserve University (MetroHealth Medical Center). I have been thinking about combining my interest in scuba diving and medicine together. I thought about diving medicine as a career and was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to pursue further training. I' ve read a little about the field at the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine Society website. It seems that most people going into the field have gone through an ER residency instead. Could anyone give me some advice in how to pursue this?

Much appreciated.

Regards,
Adrian

Hello Diving Doctor:

The best combination appears to be in the field of hyperbaric medicine. In this category, the most common condition treated is refractory wounds. I am sure that others will have something to add.

Hello Diving Doctor:

By far the best training in diving medicine that you can get would be with the military but this would require that you join the service. The Davis Hyperbaric Laboratory at Brooks AFB has the longest, continuously operating, hyperbaric medicine fellowship (true - - NOT a residency in that you must already be residency trained and board eligible prior to acceptance). Of course, it also requires that you be enrolled in the USAF, Army, Navy, or allied nations military medical force; but as noted - that's a small price to pay for the BEST!

Duke University also offers a hyperbaric fellowship, as does Caroline Fife at
Herman Hospital, Houston.

You can go to seminars in diving medicine, some of which are very good in exotic locales and which provide CME. Biomedical Seminars in the UK and Medical Seminars are good examples. DAN, UHMS, SPUMS and several other agencies offer courses that are CME approved.
