Diving in Mallorca - advice needed

Hi everybody,

I am to going to Mallorca next week - near Palma.:blinking:

Does anybody can recomend dive center? How is diving in general there? What is the usual water temperature these days. Any "must dive" places there?

Recomendations will be highly appreciated!!!:icon_idea

Hi magus,

I run a dive center near palma, we are 5mn drive from the harbour approximately on the south-west side.

the water is pretty clear these days, something like 10-15m vis to more. temperature at 10m is approx 19-20°C depending on the dive sites, some have a hard thermocline and will go to 18-17°.

There are quite a few dive sites depending on your qualification level and experience, from walls, pinnacles and wrecks.

Be advised that the law in spain requires :
- medical certificate of less than 2 years (if you don't have it, and wish to dive through us let me know we'll get you sorted)
- dive insurance (can be provided by some dive centers)
- dive certification

logbook highly recommended to show us your experience and allow you to go to that extend and we can also have a drink after the dive whilst logging, you are on vacation after all .

Air Temperature is approx 22-25°C for the next few days and warming up gradually. it's sunny

Important point - you need a Dive Medical signed by a Doctor .... PADI self Cert is not accepted.
Most dive centres will sort this out - but it is usually cheaper to get done before you go - plus you know for sure you have passed and why spend holiday time in a Doctors.

I have a local diver who is also a Doctor - he does Dive Medicals for £20 ... at my age only lasts 3 years, but my sons lasts for 10.

Didn't Spain axe the medical requirement? Spain, the Balearics and the canary islands now should legally just accept the standard self cert medical. Certainly the last 3 times i've dived there self cert was fine.

About the only EU country i can think of now that requires a doctor is Malta and they only require it to enrol on a course not for simply diving.

I generally carry my HSE commercial medical with me anyway just in case its needed but hasn't been yet.

Hmm ... maybe things have chnaged since I last dived there ... I'll ping a mail to dive centre and ask.

Did a quick poll of 8 dive centres... in Canaries, mainland Spain & Mallorca.

#2 said that Dr. certificates are still required (both were in Canaries)

#5 said that Self Cert was OK as long as all boxes could be answered 'No' on form, any 'Yes' would need a full Doctors fit to dive certificate.

One added that Self Cert was Ok for general diving, but a Dr Cert needed for any courses (which seems absurd to me - you are either at risk or not)



So answer is not that simple

Hi everyone,

Similar to Magus' question, I'm going to Menorca next week and would like to try a dive or 2. Anyone know of a good school? Regarding the medical, can any doctor, from any country issue it? What must the medical evaluation include? Does it have to be done by a doctor specialising in scuba?

I have been in Spain this summer 2009 and they still require the medical certificate. To get one done in Spain is next to impossible, so try getting a signature from your local physician on the standard PADI form available on their home page. That should be enough. But it still sucks.

Yes, the law is still the same one, which has not changed, all depends on the "communities" like cataluna or valencia, or balearic etc have some certain rules. for example in certain places it is also forbidden to dive under 16 years of age.

therefore for doctors the best bet is either to get a medical certificate before you come to spain, it is valid for 2 years so you're quite ok.

Else contact the Dive schools and ask them if they know of any doctor who can do a check-up for you, I personally work with 3 doctors who can do those check-ups and send people there. During the peak season i also have a doctor who can come directly to the centre to do the general check-ups.
