On the Bonaire trip report, all credit goes to my wife.
All but a few of the pictures and none of the videos have had any type
of color editing. For the most part they are what the camera took with
the exception of reducing the size.
One of the drawbacks in video mode is that no refocusing occurs during
the video. Once you press the shutter button, focusing is set and remains
fixed during that video. Same is true for zoom. You cannot zoom in/out
while taking a video. You do get mp4 compression which most other
cameras don't have. This allows taking longer videos without sucking up
all your memory. You could even take a video of an entire dive if thats
what you want.
I don't think you need macro lenses for this camera. It has a macro mode
that works down to a few inches. When in underwater mode, the automatic
focusing will flip to macro mode when you get close to things so you don't have
to remember to set the camera to macro mode like you have to do in land
mode.
I have noticed that the focusing was not quite as sharp when using the optical
zoom in macro mode. Although at 5mp when you are that close, I'm not
sure zoom is needed anyway.
Yeah, the custom batteries suck. I've always avoided cameras that use
them. In this case I bit the bullet and got it anyway. I shelled out another
$50 for an extra battery and battery charger so I could have an extra
battery charging while I'm using the camera. NOTE: the charger that
comes with the camera charges the battery INSIDE the camera.
This doesn't allow charging a battery while you are using the camera; hence
why I bought the extra battery charger for $25.
Is it worth $500. Well, I thought so.But there are other camera options out there
for similar and possibly less money. There are also other choices that
are probably much higher quality but cost more as well.
