for future address registration, I suggest using 1600 Pennsyvania Ave, Washington, D.C.

It's the perfect address for junk email to be sent to.

"austriandiveress@whitehouse.gov" Sounds good to me. They start sending really nasty stuff and the secret service might get involved!

Just unplug your router for a few hours and your provider will assign a new ISP number unless your paying extra for a static....

For that to work, the IP address is bound to the cable modem or DSL modem. unplug that for a couple hours.

It is a "fishing scheme" Maybe the Tonga Bureau of Investigation "TBI" will be interested in the case. But I think they are busy through christmas....oh wait, thats Tonka...I always get those two mixed up.

actually, it all depends on the ISP. I've got a static IP but don't pay for it. my ISP just uses static Ip's on it's cable modems. (since most of them are left on 24 hours a day. they told me it just makes admin easier for troubleshooting).

I bet if ya unplug it for 8Hrs, it'll switch to another within the block....Mine is kinda the same way with FIOS and I unplugged it just to see overnight...It did change..But a search still showed it close to the last one...Geographically, I mean...

Bottom Line - Don't worry about it unless that registered letter comes -- which it won't.

There are so many jurisdictional issues in this situation, it'll never pan out. Where was the 'crime' committed? Austria or Tonga? Whose law was violated - Austria or Tonga? How much will it cost to pursue a person across these (Internet) International lines? How much to trace your IP and get a court order to your Internet provider? Will Austrian courts give someone a court order so the firm can trace someone who downloaded "freeware" that became "feeware"? Nah.

If someone is not dead, it ain't gonna happen. Anything less than murder isn't worth the effort.

:yeahbaby: Right on the money !!!

Wow.. thanks for so many helpful responses. I certainly will have their email address blocked; that hadnt even occured to me.
There are two websites involved here, and to be honest I'm not sure how they are connected. The Tongan site (not that I'd mention the name, but its www.kino.to) has the films, and they steer you to another site which should remain nameless, www.desktop-downloads.de. There you are told that you must download the DixV video player, and that this download is free. After you've managed to close all the porn popups ("my dirty hobby"...er, not mine, but you get the idea), you then do the download. The skanky part is, even if you already have the player you are told to download or update it, I guess to make you look at more ads, who knows...and thats how I got into trouble.
And the rest you already know...
The somewhat scary part is that after you dont respond to the email from the company behind all this (it just might be called Content Services) you are then contacted by an ambulance-chaser type lawyer: gosh, I guess his name might be Olaf Tank. But the more I Google and read up on this situation the clearer is becomes that the correct thing to do is ignore it.
Thanks again, guys!
