Snapped this fellow at Long Point, Palos Verdes, CA, about 35 feet, water temp 52 degrees, on Jan 12th. Seems to be a marine snail, but I couldn't find it in any of my books or on line. Anyone have an ID?

There were plenty of Kellet's Whelks around, but they don't have those distinctive knobs on the pointed end of the shell.

Is it possible for interspecies breeding between Kellet's whelk and knobbed whelk?
The coloration looks distinctively like a Kellet's whelk.
The knobby growths are reminiscent of those on a knobbed whelk.

If I had to choose one, I'd stick with the Kellet's whelk ID.
I ain't no snail expert, though. :D

Thanks, Max:

I had considered that possibility in light of BubbleTrubbles' reply. I appreciate your confirmation.
