I searched this forum for info about dive ops and I think I found one I'll probably go with based on Scubaboard comments. I say probably because the email response I got from the shop didn't really answer my questions. I will look at a few others to compare a little more and will give them a call once I nail down my dates.

I am planning to be in FL (probably Orlando and Tampa) for a 8 or 9 days in mid-late April. I want to take the family on the manatee snorkel but would also like to do some dives.

I have a couple questions: First, is that getting too late for the Manatees to really be worth trying to see? Second what are water temps in the Gulf and near Tampa that time of year? What are typical behaviors on dive boats in the area? IE is it group swim behind a DM (like in HI) or is it a "find yourself a buddy plan your dive dive your plan" type situation like it seems to be in CA? Are there any requirements like safety sausages that divers on a charter typically need to consider for themselves?

The water should be back up in the 70's at least. Depends on how long it has been since our last real cold spell.

The dive boats around here usually operate in a plan your dive and dive your plan mode. You can get an escort by a DM if you want one but it will probably cost you extra.

If you are looking for a good charter that goes out every day of the week call Brandon at Scuba Quest. He can hook you up with their charter in Bradenton. They have nice boats and go out every day.

Capt. Ty out of St. Pete runs a really nice boat as well. Both guys are members on this board.

Thanks for the recommendations and the information.
