The Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre (CCMDC) is celebrating National Science Week by showcasing local research into marine environments. National Science Week is Australia’s largest festival, celebrating science, innovation, mathematics, engineering and technology and highlights the importance of these in our everyday lives. National Science Week is held annually in August and is now in its thirteenth year. This year it will run from 14 to 22 August.

On Wednesday, 18th August, the CCMDC will present three speakers who have conducted research into local marine environments.

· Karen O’Neill - “Impacts of Caulerpa taxifolia on fauna of seagrass beds” - A large-scale managerial action, aimed at the eradication of the invasive Caulerpa in estuaries of NSW, provided Karen with the opportunity to assess the likely impacts of this green alga on those systems. Comparisons have been made of the infauna and epifauna of native seagrass (Zostera) and Caulerpa.

· Dr. Jason Morton- “Wrasses – the rainbow fish of the sea” - Jason will talk on wrasses in our coastal waters, including information on the main species that people are likely to see, whether they be fishing, snorkeling or SCUBA diving. He will also go into his research on the identification of individual wrasses and his future research.

· Dr. Margaret Platell- “Marine research in the Central Coast” - This talk will focus mainly on fish, describing what is known of the fish populations living in different habitat types in marine and estuarine waters of the central coast, using data collated from University of Newcastle researchers. It will highlight our state of knowledge and where gaps exist in that knowledge.

This event is proudly supported by the University of Newcastle, Central Coast campus.

Hi Guys

There are some more marine talks on the Coast coming up.

(No copyright intended from the email I recieved this morning and I am sure they wont mind me re posting it here for more people to come)

*************************************************************

Dear Marine Discovery Lovers,

We have responded to your feedback and have two more great Marine Discovery talks coming up!

Tuesday April 19th- Oceanographer Moninda Roughen will delve into ocean circulation along the NSW coast, how they work and how they are influenced by climate change. For our rock platform lovers, Keith Davey, photographer and artist will be exploring the harsh living conditions of rock platforms. Keith is also the author of a guide book on rock platform life.

Thursday May 26th- our focus will be on marine life as we soar across the globe with a talk by bird observer Chris Herbert. Learn about migratory birds living on the Central Coast and Hunter Estuary, explore their migratory habits, breeding and where they spend their time. We will then dive into the ocean with David Harasti, another incredible photographer who will be showcasing the weird and exotic sea life right on our doorstep!

Both talks will be hosted by the Shelly Beach Golf Club from 7pm- 9pm. Tuesday and Thursday is their $12 steak and schnitzel night. The brasserie opens at 5.30pm and boasts beautiful views over the ocean for a relaxing evening.

Bookings are not necessary and light refreshments will be served.

Just a reminder to any Local Government, schools, and non-government community groups and networks undertaking educational projects, events or activities with a focus on improving catchment health- we still have our sponsorship funding up to $1500 available for any catchment health education projects. Click on this link for more information- Hunter-Central Rivers CMA - 2010-11 Sponsorship Program.

PLEASE PROMOTE THIS EVENT AND FORWARD IT TO ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS AND NETWORKS

Please phone me if you require further information on any of the above,
