Diver death in Guam

Very little information on this yet, but a diver was spotted in trouble on the surface...a bystander swam out from the beach, brought him back, and was assisted by another in performing CRP/Mouth to Mouth until authorities arrived. Victim (a male Japanese tourist, reportedly 29 years old) was pronouced dead at the hospital a short while later. This beach is frequently used for intro diving or Open Water courses, but there has been no information made public about the qualifications of the diver. I wasn't involved in this, so I wouldn't have any further information.

HAGÅTÑA — A 29-year-old male Japanese tourist died Sunday following a diving accident that occurred early afternoon at Outhouse Beach along Route 11 Cabras Island, Piti.Port Authority officials said the victim was scuba diving with a group of individuals when the incident occurred. Port police received the report of a diving accident at 12:50 p.m. Upon arrival, the responding officer found that members of a diving company were already conducting CPR.As the victim was transported, medics continued CPR but the victim was “unconscious and unresponsive.”The victim was pronounced dead at Naval Hospital at 1:38 p.m.The name of the diving company was not provided as of press time. This is the second drowning incident of the year.

A tourist killed in a diving accident in Piti Monday died of an air embolism, according to Guam's medical examiner.
Guam medical examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola said he found air Ryota Yoshikubo's circulatory system, which could have come from the diver holding his breath.
"I think it's really unfortunate," said Lee Webber, president of Micronesian Diver's Association in Piti. MDA is not the company the tourist was diving with.
Webber said that an air bubble can form if a diver breathing compressed air under three feet of water holds his breath and ascends too quickly.
Diving deaths from air embolisms are not common, Webber said. Beginning divers are taught never to hold their breath.
Yoshikubo was declared dead on arrival at Naval Hospital Guam, according to Pacific Daily News files. Outhouse Beach is commonly used by dive companies to teach beginner scuba diving lessons. Authorities didn't release the name of the company the man was diving with.
