I find it very hard to understand/imagine/believe that the ocean temperature could change 5 degrees in the matter of a week. It is a fairly large body of water. Can you think of any other possible explanation?

Surprisingly, the water temps dropped during the 8 days we were diving. Everyone's computers read a bit different, but on 3/12 three of us were getting 77-79-80 respectively on Columbia Deep. By yesterday, when we did Columbia Deep again, we were getting 73-74-75. It was quite noticeable how much colder it was than the week before. And both dives we went to just about 80 ft, so it wasn't a depth issue. Also had some odd current changes as well on a few of the last dives , so wasn't sure if maybe that was affecting the water temps.

What were you wearing? I plan to take skins to wear under a 3mm full length..is that gonna be enough? Ya got me concerned about those 73-75 temps you just reported. No wonder the Eagle Rays are still around. I usually go with the year around temperature charts for Cozumel which have always been right on. I've never been in April...but the charts say 80-82. Guess I need to be sure to check with someone who's there the first week of April.

The water even had a different quality at times, where you could see a 'shimmer' the way you see a distortion over a hot road. It was all very interesting, and not the norm for us from any of our previous trips to Coz.

I don't chill easily either, so it looks like skins and 3mm shortie/full length will be adequate. I'm sure I won't need more than that. Gonna wait to hear from someone who's there the first week in April before I decide on shortie vs full length...but I usually only wear the full length in December.

I was in a full 3 mil with a 5 mil vest/hood. Froze my a** off on both dives that day and I don't chill easily either. In fact, the day Kat is talking about with the funky thermoclines, currents and 75 degree water temps, I kept my boat coat on for the whole SI trying to get warmed up. (I guess the hour plus bottom times that me and Kat and her hubby had didn't help matters ) My husband, who is a DM there, says March is always a month of wacky currents and weird water temps. And, FWIW, he has been using a 7 mil since November.

We're bringing 5 mil full suits.....I never get too hot, but after a week of diving (even at 80 degrees) in a 3 mil I'm cold every dive.

Did I mention I'll be in Cozumel on Wednesday?

yes, funky water temps and funky currents...today, we dove tormentos in reverse, north to south, with almost no current. same with Santa Rosa. and pockets of 3-5 degree cold spots....brrr....kicked thru to warmer water when I hit them. Santa Rosa in reverse is a great dive by the way!
