WHITEFISH POINT - State police say a diver has died while exploring a shipwreck in Lake Superior off the Michigan coast.
Michigan State Police divers recovered the body of 52-year-old Derril Yerigan of New Richmond, Wis. on Tuesday.
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) received a call at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Monday from the dive charter boat Blackdog. Blackdog Capt. Brian Anderson of Frost, Minn., reported he had deployed four recreational divers on the shipwreck SS Samuel Mather. Three of the divers completed their dive and surfaced, but the fourth failed to return to the surface and was presumed dead.
The USCG contacted the Michigan State Police Underwater Recovery Unit and requested assistance.
The USCG immediately deployed resources to the area and conducted a search of the surface water and could not located the missing diver.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police, along with members of the MSP Underwater Recovery Unit began to investigate and commenced with recovery efforts.
MSP divers recovered the body of the deceased diver from the deck of the shipwreck SS Samuel Mather on Tuesday. The incident is still under investigation, and foul play is not suspected.
