Dive report from Sunday August 5th 2012

1st Dive
Dive Site : Pelican Rock
Max Depth : 75 Feet.
Surface Conditions: You could tell at a distance from outside the marina how big the swell was hiting Neptune's Finger so by the time we arrived to Pelican the surge was reaching little by little the site .
We decided to get in the water on free descent at the NE wall where there is protection.
Underwater Conditions: Visibility of 30 feet the first 20 feet of water at around 45 feet deep there was strong current heading outside the bay. We went down to the sandfalls which were huuge. After that we swim a little bit to North Wall where we made our safety stop and made our ascent

2nd Dive
Dive Site: North Wall's First Canyon.
Max Depth : 100 Feet
Surface Conditions: A well big and pronounced surge already hitting really strong at Pelican Rock. On the day before the weather said there were two storms close to vallarta and manzanillo. Probably these swells effect of these two systems.
Underwater Conditions: At North Wall side it was no too much effect on the swell from Pelican Rock, so we went down the canyon looking for more visibility and calm waters, a lot of garden eels appeared at 85 feet around the sand though the visibility was no that great. Still the current was heading out of the bay. And by the time we get to the safety stop the swell started to hit North Wall as well. A long school of machete fish passed by us at the very far and inner side of north wall.

Give us a call to arrange for your dives.

Dive Trip Report for Sunday August 12 – 2012
1st Dive
Divesite: Pelican Rock:
Max Depth: 90 feet.
Surface Conditions: A lot of swell due to tropical storm “Hector” about 475 km off the coast of cabo san lucas.
Underwater Conditions: Nice visibility but difficult to surround Pelican Rock due to the swell so we jumped again off the North side of Pelican Rock to make a free descent. The Sand Falls were falling to 100 % , with a lot of volume.
2nd Dive
Dive Site: North Wall´s 1st canyon.
Surface Conditions: Pretty similar to the past Sunday. The swell started to hit more agreesive into Pelican Rock, so we jumped off the boat on blue water outside the line of boats to make a blue water descent while we navigate to North´s Walls 1st canyon.
Underwater Conditions: Were we dropped off to 90 feet down sigths of a lot of garden eels around the sandy portion of the canyon. The visibility was awesome. Aprox 50 feet. Some termoclines here and there dropping still to 72 ish.

Give us a call to arrange for your dives.

Happy Diving to U all.

Some of the best diving of the year can be found in August through November in Los Cabos. For the past few years our hurricane season hasn't even resulted in a significant amount of rain. This year, the law of averages has balanced the scale. The Eastern North Pacific has had 9 named storms and 5 hurricanes since the beginning of August. While only approximately half of the stroms resulted in rainfall in Los Cabos, each storm affected the local dive sites. The most recent hurricane (Paul) came close to Cabo San Lucas, but made land farther north earlier this week.

Over the past few days conditions have been improving and should return to "typical" seasonal conditions soon. This week Nautilus Dive Tech has made excursion trips to both La Paz and Gordo Banks.

La Paz sites:

Los Islotes- 60 feet-40 minutes
Swanny Reef- 40 feet-50 minutes
Fang Ming- 65 feet-50 minutes

Visibility: 15-40 feet
Temperature: 80-85 Degrees F

Gordo Banks:

Although we did not see Hammer Heads, Gordo Banks was still a great dive. The sea was calm and current was moderate. The group made way from San Jose Del Cabo and was on site before 9:00 am. We took our maden voyage on our new boat Deep Colors. The 30 foot Osprey should make for a great dive boat. Although the hammer heads are yet to return, we saw a tremendous amount of Tuna and Bonitos. Some Tuna probably tipped the scales over 200 pounds!!

Dive 1-120 feet-30 minutes
Dive 2- 120 feet 35 minutes

Visibility: 15-40 feet
Temperature: 80-85 Degrees F

Nautilus Dive Tech took some time yesterday to explore some new sites on the East Cape. The sites were about 6-9 miles north of Gordo Banks. NDT is working to expand this market. The area has some beautiful diving and is virtually untouched. Our charters for the East Cape leave from San Jose Del Cabo. This departure point significantly reduces the travel time to this epic area. Our new 30 foot Osprey is making a fantastic dive boat. We will be scheduling more exploration days in the following weeks.

Dive Site Alpha: 60 feet/ 40-50 feet of visibility/ 83 degrees
Divers saw more than dozen lobsters, large schools of Surgeon Fish, Moorish Idols, and large groupers.

Dive Site Bravo: 120 feet/ 50-60 feet of visibility/ 82 degrees
Divers saw thousands of Sea Fans, giant schools of bait fish, and a variety of sting rays.

Dive Site Charlie: 60 feet/ 30-40 feet of visibility/ 83 degrees
Divers saw an excellent rock structure that sprawled over a 100 meters. The structure attracted numerous parrot fish, groupers, snappers, and several large morray eels. We are looking forward to heading back to dive site Charlie to continue what promises to be an awesome site.

Happy Diving,

NDT Staff

Todays charter went to the Cabo San Lucas Bay.

The local water is improving nicely!! The water was calm and the wind was almost non-existent.
Visibility was better in the 40-60 foot depth range.

Divers saw a lot of porcupine puffers, parrot fish, mexican hogfish, and blue damsels. There was also an unusual amount of sea lion activity. We watched as the sea lions came in for their mid morning buffett. What a show... Bon Appetit...

Dive #1: Pelican Rock

Depth: 40-110 feet
Visibility: 20-70 feet
Temperature: 84 degrees

Dive 2: Land's End

Depth: 65 feet
Visibility: 50-70 feet
Temperature: 84 degrees

Land's end is great... You ever know what you will see underwater, plus the sights during the surface interval are great ;-)
