I've tried smaller boots, smaller fins, rubber straps, spring straps......they all give me blisters. Duct tape rocks.....sticks well, and no blisters. Done.

Neoprene socks work well too, in longer or shorter styles depending on what fits well with the ankles (zipper/no zipper) of your wetsuit and your boots.

Are you booties over the ankle height? I suspect they are not, but rather are low, under the ankle style. My wife can't wear low booties for the reason you gave. So get yourself some tall booties.

Regardless of what the socks are made of I turn them inside out so there is no seam to chafe me anywhere - heel to toe - works great for me (though I'm sure someone somewhere has wanted to tell me I'm putting my socks on inside out!). :)
