The main thing I was looking for is some place where I can take long walks on the beach in the mornings and snorkel in the afternoons. So CCV and AKR are out.
CCV has a very long shoreline frontage that runs about 1/3 mile. It is more of a hike than a flip-flop walk. So, maybe, don't count that out.
The shore snorkel from Fantasy and CocoView is the best close-in shore snorkel on the island. After you do FI for a week, try CCV and you'll see that it is quite different and markedly better than FI which is just 100 yards across the channel.
The price difference and the scarcity of availability might really be the deciding factor. It's usually booked so they don't give it away like many other alternatives.
Last question for you experts---one of the friends staying at FI with me doesn't have equipment. Do you think he can rent equipment at FI and feel safe about it?
Most of the time, rental gear looks like death warmed over due to salt and UV exposure. A qualified diver should know how to perform simple checks to ascertain if rental gear is functional. Check the BC inflator and see if it holds air or if the inflator leaks and slowly adds air. Suck out of both regulators. Go diving. I can attest that the rental gear at CCV is in perfect working order and looks great. I use it instead of dragging my gear down- that way I can bring more Crayolas for the Madjken Broby Children's Home.
