On the crossing from Catalina to San Pedro over the Labor Day weekend, we saw two Blue Sharks and a Hammerhead. The Blues were not so surprising, but we were all very surprised by the Hammerhead.

All sorts of cool and uncommon sightings happening with the warmer waters this season.

You should have seen the blues back in the 60s and 70s!

Hammerheads have been a somewhat frequent sighting in the Channel this summer

Why is the water so warm at Catalina, yet 66 here in Laguna? I don't understand how the water temps can vary so dramatically in SoCal over very short distances. Can someone explain?
A month ago we were seeing 72 at 40 feet in Laguna, though I was pleasantly surprised by 64 Monday 9/15, afternoon at Shaws. Felt so good.

I remember seeing lots of hammerheads in the channel between Anacapa and Santa Cruz Island in the 80's
